    got a couple questions.

just picked up my replacement walker Radiator from Reids in orange for my banger RPU. i kinda tore mine apart and didnt check the clearances on the fan to old radiator. whats a safe distance from fins to radiator (4 fin fan). also the fill neck has a different size radiator cap. cant figure out what pressure the current cap is. what is everyone running and where can you find the pressure rating. there is a 6'0 mark in the center of the cap. is it a 6lb cap?

I'm running a 13 lb cap. It is probably to high as I have trouble with head gaskets from time to time. 6 lb would be better.

Also if you get the same core set same fin same design as original walker radiator are they pretty close in cooling characteristics and pressure required? I have alot of people tellin mr I'll need a higher pressure cap cause it's a new radiator even if it's a direct replacement to the original

I've had water pump leaks with old style pumps and a high pressure cap

    Never head gaskets go.

Did you chamfer the holes for head studs? Many blocks will 'pull up in the area around head bolts/studs just enough to loose the head.

I always torque in 10ftlb increments and wait 24 hours to re-torque cold then run the motor up to temp cool and once more.

I have several engines (different makes) that are very sensitive to head bolt/stud torque values.

Look at the washers too. Hardest ones you can get. And some lube on them top and bottom.

In almost all cases I use either Copper Coat or Hylomar You can industrial tubes of Hylomar almost as cheap as a few of the Permatex tubes at Pepboys:)

    Jim,

I'm running a v-8 water pump and it seems to do a good job of holding the pressure.

Your comment about the head studs has me thinking about that as the cause. Next time I swap the head I will check that.

I copper coat my head gaskets too.

I'm using hardened "set up" washers that are @ R/C 45 - 50. Plenty hard. And ARP studs too.

Your torque procedure is same as mine.

The engine I'm running now was pulled from a '33 commercial truck, cleaned up, clearances checked and set, and hop up parts installed. The head was surfaced and pressure checked, but the flatness of the block deck was only stoned smooth by hand with the studs in. So it is very likely that the deck is not as flat as it should be.

This was only going to be a temporary engine until I fixed my stroker. That was 2 years ago.

  10. Hey Bangers,
I posted this in the general section but now think that one of you may know this....
My 29 A coupe has an exhaust manifold with "industria argentina" cast into it.
Does my A have south american roots? Replacement part? Wassssup?

@crminal: maybe somebody has to correct me. as i know, ford "produced" since 1917 also in Argentina. More precisely: the parts came from the us and the cars were assembled in the plant in argentina. Maybe a few parts were specially made for the south-american market (climate).

ARP studs maybe very hard and not stretching. This results in reduced clamping pressure.

  14. You should contact Walker and ask them what cap to use. They should be able to tell you what pressure the radiator is supposed to operate at.

  15. Years ago there used to be a lot of poorly fitting repop parts imported from Argentina. Gears, brake drums, and other miscellaneous small parts come to mind.

  16. That's what I was thinking, that perhaps when it was restored, a repop manifold was used. Makes more sense than anything else.

I use a multi weight oil in my stuff. Either diesel with a little zink additive thrown in or at Walmart you can get Accel 10W-40W "SF quality for model years 1988 and earlier". 4lbs pressure cap is more than enough!

  28. IDK fellas its been a busy work week for me. I looked at my Model A today but did not drive her :( Tomorrow I will :) I added some of the cheaper water wetter to my radiator as we have been 105+ all last week here and my car was running warm and boiling a bit. The stuff worked quite well and I can tell it was worth the 8 dollars. Just what I been up to here in Bakertucky. Almost forgot I wrote an article for the Bakersfield Model A Club which I am a member of for the August newsletter. Nothing to spectacular though.-Weeks

Tried Water Wetter in my car, seems to work. Anyone know a generic substitute? Homebrew?

  30. An old time "A" guy once told me that even if you didn't or couldn't start it you should at least kick the tires everyday as you pass by it!
