Looks like a real nice score, but there is one little problem. That is a 1954 or earlier 331 hemi. The lack of water outlets on the heads, and the style of the front cover is a dead give away. Still a cool mill, just not a 392.

I lived in York in the 60s and graduated from York Suburban High school and I remember a 32 with a hemi engine and it was known as Ramis's rod, not sure on spelling, maybe its the same car. I love channeled cars.

I like the chrome wheels but I also like the way it looks with the five spokes. The gold ones look interesting as well but for now I'm very happy with the chrome wheels. If you look closely in the black and white photo you'll see that the wheels was wearing hubcaps of some sort with a pointier center than the rounded caps that are on it now.

Thanks Slayer, the engine is a 1952 Hemi 331. Did someone say it was a 392?

Cool! Was it blue? Because this car has worn this paint since it was built as a hot rod by Glen "Rudy" Rudisill and his dad. I'd kill for any other photos of the car. I'm madly going through all my little books from that time but so far nothing.

Also looking for a copy of Cool Car and Square Roll Bars to see if there's anything in there.

I'm revving to get my hands on it. It's currently locked up safe and sound out of site until I get there. I hope I get there before the weather cools up though by the look of that earlier photo it's not afraid of no snow!

Damn this is the first time I've seen this car and I love it!!! Can't believe that the molded frame to firewall hadn't cracked. That's boss!

I couldn't believe that also. I suppose if you do a job right it will last 53 years and still look good. It's pretty cool that you haven't seen it...you've seen a lot. I think that makes it even cooler somehow (that not many have seen it yet). Someone must have a photo of it somewhere though. No one would build a car like this and not drive it to a show of some sort. Looks to have been a top quality car in it's day. Ten grand they spent back in 1957! That's a lot.

Since it's an East Coast car I would bet money 31Whitey could find some info on this car. He'd at least know who to start talking to for more info on it and perhaps some pics of it in the early days. He's real dialed in with East coast hot rods. PM him and see if he can't drum up some info.

Thanks, we have all it's history, I'm just hoping for some pics or stories of it out and about. There were thousands of these built in the day so it's not that unique or anything. Just a cool survivor that not many seem to have seen. I'll contact 31Whitey - thanks for the tip.

Bill... those pointy caps you mention... they were a mainstay of early East Coast rods....
Mine too had a full set.. and today.... they are very hard to find.
As mentioned.a beautiful, preserved East Coast car!

I do and I will and I agree!

Now, I (clearly) need a set of those caps (lol). So, do they have a name or are they from a specific car?

Cool! Yeah Rudy still runs a shop and owns quite a number of cool cars still. I spoke to one of the previous owners (who still lives where he's always lived - same with "Rudy"). He knows Rudy and this week he's going to head over there for a coffee (he sees Rudy's truck parked at the coffee house most mornings) to discuss my (their) car and get all the paper work I need for import approval (don't ask our leftist government has stopped all modified imports unless we can PROVE it was built before 1989 - sigh). If they won't let it in I'm moving to York to be with my car. Fortunately I can earn my money from anywhere in the world (I run an Internet business) so it's not work that will keep me here. I'll just have to visit every 3 months for 3 months. When something this good happens you need to think outside the box.

  18. Very cool! Thanks for fixing the picture problem. I could not see them a couple of days ago. What a treasure!

The more people say "I've never seen this car" the better I feel about buying it. This sale just keeps on getting better. I never considered a metallic blue car - ever but this one works. The colour is similar to my first paint job on a bike frame for my cousin back in the early 70s. I can remember being bedazzled and almost hypnotized watching the metallic paint flow. It all peeled off as soon as it dried of course (wrong primer) but for those few minutes I was transfixed. This car anchors me back to that time. Even the adventure of planning a trip and drive around is making me tingle in my...right foot.

Anyone else know of or seen this from the York PA area since 1957? The history has already been recorded but I'd love to hear of any stories or if you've ever seen it.

I looked in the book, and couldn't find your car. Most of the pictures are cars that were racing in that time frame. Your car style is right in line with them.

So, just how long will you have to wait to get it? Bet your not sleeping, I know I didn't for two weeks when I bought mine.

I had a chance to buy this car a couple years ago, when it was in Ohio, in fact I have the same pictures. I don't have any other pictures. Story I got is the car was not really ever finished. Didn't drive around much. But your pictures show it was, so who knows. Very cool car.

  23. When it is mentioned it may have been in a mag, they may be confusing it with a 5w thats in Rodding & Restyling June 55 'Pride of the east', it does look very similar but no leaded in rear fenders and the coupe in the mag is sporting a front nerf bar. No interior shots though...........maybe its an early version if the same car????!!!!! Just thought I would mention it for your ref.
It is also in a later R&R.

Thanks Don. Did you ever get a chance to see it?

That would be cool. It was delivered in pieces to Rudy in 1957 to construct (including dash) but it would be cool to see the one you're referring to. Take a digital photo of it and post it up if you get a spare moment.

In the black and white shot with the white suspension and brakes?

Thanks for taking a look. That's good to know about the styling.

How long? Longer that I care to wait. I'm looking to fly over asap to secure it and lay my hands on it. It's registered and ready to drive off into the sunset but I need to find a shop in the NJ area I can trust where I can take it and put it up on a hoist.

Might even take it back to Rudy and his boys to give it a once over! That would be a day to remember. I imagine it would be like meeting (and I know I've said this before) a Ron Stetter type character as seen in these (one of my favourite) clips.

the mack dealership i work for was just down the road from there.i bought a 79 4x4 ford from there.it was a used car lot at one time.i can remember seeing it in the one bay when the door was open but never saw it on the road either.my dad is an old hot rodder from the late 50`s.he had a 31 chevy coupe with a 3x2 348 in it back then.i`ll see if he remembers it being around york.from what i understand there wasn`t too many hot rods around in york that vintage.

Yes, sat in it, crawled all over it, called Evel when I was looking at it...didn't sleep for many nights thinking about it...the pictures of it in a driveway were at my buddy Jim's house. We were thinking of trading my brown 32 even up. The car was not running at the time. I was supposed to work on it to get it up and running then jim did some stuff on his own then he sold it! I am glad to see it when to someone that appreaciats it for what it is and wont update it.

As I've yet to see the car can you tell me what your impressions was of the quality of work? It looks like a quality job but I'm expecting a few things will need looking at.

There will be no updates to anything it has not already been. I may re-visit moments in it's history though. I kind of like those 5 spokes and the 32 front guards that were molded in at one stage (not originally although close up shots reveal that it was at one time molded into the body just as the rear fenders were.

Thanks 29. I'd appreciate it. Was there a cruising spot around there in the "early days" I was told there were many of these types of cars around the area at the time and this is nothing (really) special and typical of the era and and area. I'm not sure how big York is or was back then though. It's all fascinating history and I can't wait to hear more.

Cool and thank your Dad, I'll make a note of those locations and make sure to visit them all (if they are still around). I'm still not sure if I'll be able to swing a US trip but I'd really like to take the opportunity to visit with the old owners. They probably have no idea what these old cars mean to me (us). They need to know. In many cases these were just working cl*** guys (though coming up with 10k to build a car in 1957 must have taken some doing).
