I'm really not familiar with the 54 Merc and I'm trying to help my father in law who lives in Reno, Nv... over the phone!! He kinda fell in love with the idea of laying his Merc as low as possible and he wants to set up an air ride system. He was asking me about the 4 link set up, which i told him he would most likely have to notch and 4 link the rear, raise the tunnel, maybe the wheel wells, gas tank? How about the front suspension? Did you guys leave it stock and modified it? Please let me know what you guys have done , it would be greatly appreciated!! BTW, he's a great fabricator, He's just never did this application and he wants to know what's out there!!! Thank you!!
4 link or truck arms, notch, raise the tunnel, recommend raise the gas tank as well. In front I have just drop spindles and the bags. maybe want to z the frame up a bit to get that last little bit. That is what mine has.
I got my 54 merc 4 linked and bagged at Starlite rod n custom in torrance. I know they C notched the frame tunnled the floor a little in the rear, but did not need to relocate the tank. As for the front just bags, I myself want the front lower but it looks like they will have to cut into the fender wells. The fabricator who did all my work used to have a 54 merc wagon so he was familiar with the car. Let me know if you have any other specific questions and I will try to get them answered for you. Feel free to look at my album for pictures. Good Luck, JoelChris
If the frontends are the same as a 54 Fords, forget about trying to stuff a bag up in the spring pockets. Fill in the hole for the spring and mount the bag under that. For the A-arm just cut out the contours for the spring and weld in a big flate plate across it. There's enough room (3.5''?) to stuff a 2600lb bag in there, even with the bumpstopd removed (or cut off with just a little bit left). To get it to lay frame (with like a 26'' tire) it'll need dropped spindles or Z'ing, after either one of these the frame will probably need to be notched for the center/drag link. The rear wheel wells are really tall and shouldn't need hacking.
