I have just recently started driving my new model A and have been doing so more frequently. The car had been sitting for 20+ yrs and maybe only driven about a few hundred miles over 40 yrs. I'm getting a ton of blow by out of the filler tube to the point it's getting difficult to drive. How normal is blowby out of these engines and/or does this seem excessive and this engine is just whopped? I know it's old technnology and that there's no other crank case ventilation except for that tube so not sure what I should be expecting. 31 Model A
Cars has draft tubes into late 50s/early 60s w/o blowby being a big problem. I'd guess worn rings or stuck rings from sitting.
Try some Marvel Mystery oil or Rislone and drive it. Give it some time for the additive to loosen up the gummed up rings before you panic. It may take a few good runs for them to loosen up and seal again. It might not work for you but it worked for me and it is worth the try. It won't cure a worn out engine but it could get a gummed up engine to seal better. You will always see wisps of smoke from that tube when looking at a running engine of that era but it shouldn't be excessive.
drove it to work today and it was pretty bad; took out on my lunch hr and it was fine so i'm leaning to a stuck ring.
Sounds like the rings are stuck . Try the Marvel thing or just pull the spark plugs and put some trans fluid down into the cylinders . Trans fluid is a great way to clean and loosen up crud and stuck rings . The next time you get greasy hands , put some trans fluid on your hands and watch how well it cleans the grease & crud off . Just soak the cylinders good with your favorite liquid and give it time to do its job . Hopefully that should do the trick . Retro Jim
