new glass going into front and rear of 61 Pontiac bubbletop. same exact glass as chevy 61-62 bubbletop.

i know some people do or don't use a sealer with glass install when using a new rubber channel.

but, in this case, the factory manual calls for a 1/4" bead of 'medium bodied sealer' in the glass rabbet around the sides of windshield and 4 inches in on top, 8 inches in on bottom. i *think* this is because of the wrap around style might be prone to leak? not sure, but i think i'll follow their instructions... just not sure what product to use. it also calls for a 'ribbon' of 'medium bodied sealer' around the base of the rubber channel where it meets the frame on outside of pinch weld.

Napa has a gray bodied seam sealer i have used on body seams before, and remains a bit 'rubbery' after it dries when you put your thumb into it. so, i guess it feels 'medium'.... can i use it for windshield install?

My 62 Galaxie used gray butyl adhesive around the rubber seal. It is still available and I am going to put it back when the windshield goes back in. I was told to never use windshield urethane with the rubber gasket because it will destroy the gasket if it ever needs to come out.

    thanks for the response.

i guess i don't fully understand the differences between things like urethane or butyl.

i don't think i mind using a permanent sealer that would ruin the rubber channel if removed, but i would definitely want something that the excess will clean up pretty easy.

The old material that came out of some of the clips and garnish moulding seemed to be more 'dopey', like clayish rather than rubbery.

That gray stuff would be butyl adhesive. It took me a while to clean that out of my window channels. Urethane is usually black and it will stick to anything. The local glass guy told me not to use urethane with rubber seals. He said something about incompatibility between the two materials. I am going back with the butyl because it worked on my car for almost 50 years.

Kent brand bedding and glazing is the best. Dont ask for butyl , or you will get a very sticky black ribbon tape that is not for rubber gaskets.
