Heres my problem... the truck stopped running (just cut out) 2 weeks ago and I troubleshot my dizzy because I wasnt getting any juice from my ign coil. I just decided to replace the dizzy w/ a hei and I couldnt have been happier with my choice.. As I was taking off the plug wires to swap them over I noticed the kevlar sleeves that were there for header protection were toasty... I took the plug wires out of the sleeves and they had either melted into a pile of goo or were charred beyond what you could possibly imagine  My guess is that the wires ground out and burnt up the module.

I was wondering if any of you have run any kind of kevlar or asbestos cloth to protect against this kind of failure? What brand do I need to be looking for?

The reason why the dizzy was replaced was because the ign module replacement cost 30 bucks more than a hei. Also, I thought the burning smell was from the electrical hide away tube was melting.

Normally I see the shielding get brittle. Yours must be getting exceptionally hot to melt like that.

You need to reroute the wires so they are as far away from the headers as possible. Anything that is touching the headers are going to melt.

If you cant reroute them without touching exhaust pipe, you may need to rethink the exhaust.

Depending on what engine you are running, you may want to consider running your wires underneath your headers like I did. I don't have any problems with the wires coming in contact with headers partly because the plugs are lower than the headers.

can you post a link... that is what I was thinking about, but didn't know where to look. local parts stores are full of a bunch of *****s, they wouldn't know what I was talking about and they would start drooling in confusion

I was hoping not to do this, I may try to use the spark plug idea first, but yeah they are getting hot and have 4 coats of that 2000 degree ceramic header paint. They aren't getting red hot, but it doesnt show any signs of overfueling or anything like that (where the headers would have fuel to burn and get that hot)

  15. Try the suggestions above and make sure your timing isn't late, that will fry them very fast, and your header tubes will be glowing red - nothing will help your wires then.

I second the idea on checking your timing...

Getting that hot ,something else has to be wrong.

    Your thinking backwards.

Extra fuel would actually make your exhaust cooler. A lean condition would make the exhaust hotter.

Do you by chance have an infrared (sp?) things? You can actually check header temp with them. I use one to diagnose misfires as well as numerous other things. Curious as to what the actual header temp is.

I might do that, reuse my sleeves, and maybe wrap the exhaust as well. I think that is my best bet, thanks guys!

Is the vacuum advance hooked up? You are burning fuel in your exhaust.

Oh I definitely will. I dont want to keep chucking money at this thing because of these lousy headers (burning wires). I will get some new
aftermarket headers, or go to manifolds if that is the case. Thanks for the help so far guys
