It's time to get back in the garage and start wrenching. I've been wanting to try my hand at building a custom, and this car popped up locally.

He's asking $2500, but I'm sure it could be bought for $2000.

The flathead runs, hooked to a gas can (tank is rusty)

Floors, doors, trunk, and rockers look solid.

Both quarters are full of bondo and rust.

He said that he has all the interior, trim, bumpers, etc and an extra hood.

The car has been in dry storage for the last 20 years.

    Shoebox guys, what's your opinion???

I got one just like that has no engine or trans but about the same condition . Has tented glass . Missing front seat and bumper but mostly there . Will need rewire and usual rust fixed . You can get that for $1200 !
Unless it's a running engine , I would pay that much for it . Those flatheads aren't cheap to rebuild either !
    Just a thought !

was it a 4 door? I'm not a shoebox guy but the only timeI have seen rear wind wings was on a crew cab. Then again, maybe I'm just a dumb ass. Probably the latter...

    Yep, the latter :)

All shoebox sedans had a rear vent window, coupes did not.

Save some more dough and get something that requires less work, seems like way to much work for the money.

I thought that it looked pretty solid, sure it needs quarters and lower front fender patches, but thats about it.

That's easy stuff, compared to the chop it would get.

I don't think it looks that bad, I'd buy it for $2,000.
I really doubt you could find a nicer one around here for that kind of money.

not for 2g! a little too much! i would pay no more that 1000! thats it, you have a lot of patch panel work on that rust bucket! you can find something better out there, but it will cost you. the choice is yours.

I agree with everyone that says pass. I bought something similar.... and now regret it. Once you get replacement rockers and 1/4 panels you'll be about an extra $1k into it; unless you're skilled enough to make them yourself (I sure wasn't). For what I spent on mine plus replacement metal, I could have easily dropped the same on something that was solid and needed only minor work.

This may be a better buy even with transport charges.

    Attached Files:

  18. That is a $500 pile of rust held together with $150 of filler.

It looks pretty rusty, but I'm pretty sure you're the only one who's seen it in person. You have decide if it's too much to handle.

If you think you're going to pass on it, you could always lowball the guy, all he can say is "no."

I personally wouldn't pay that for it. My younger brother bought a chopped coupe with a lot less rust than that for $2,500.

I agree. Mine needed both quarters replaced, and EMS wanted around $600 plus shipping, and the rockers are over $200 plus shipping. I ended up making my own.

Also note that the EMS quarter replacements may not go as high on the quarter as the visible rust through.

OK, after looking at other shoeboxes for sale, I'd say that he is a bit high on the price. I like the idea of having another running flathead for future projects, so I am inclined to go $1500, no more.

I think the rockers are good, the quarters are shit.

clear title? I would go $1500 tops if I was wanting it bad. Your going to be in deep on those quarters.
If its running find a buyer for the flatty and sell that and drop in a modern V8 and trans and go from there.

If this is going to be your first custom ,at least find you a good start, that is nothing more than a bondo and rust bucket with a value of $500 and then you still have a piece of shit. Check around, throw an ad out and a good one or maybe something good will come your way. You haven"t been taking advice from that guy Frank on Pickers have you.?
