how much was it insured for .......................seems a little fishy....looks like they hot wired it, a kill switch would not have worked but a elec fuel pump shut off would have

  5. I probably wouldn't leave a car like his the way he did, but I still feel bad for the dude.

Maybe he'll find it in Compton wearing some 22" spinners, a new airbrush mural on the hood, gold curb feelers, and an interior smelling like vanilla spray with a hint of hot sauce.

im wondering if maybe he did want it stolen. offering a 5k reward is a nice touch, knowing its never gonna turn up again. hopefully thats not the case, but the circumstances do seem a little fishy. if the car really did get ripped off without any kind of ins scam, i do hope he gets it back, and then gets to do a little vigilante justice on the scumbags that took it!

I have a kill switch but all the security devices in the world won't stop a tow truck from picking up your pride and joy.Gone in seconds with no damage to the car.

i dont know why guys with really nice cars never get lojack for them! my buddy had his car given back to him in one day! i just dont get it. you have a high dollar car finished, but they dont get a security system for it? and im not talking about an alarm, i saw this on the local news and thought, why would you leave the top down and grab a beer? fuck that! i trust no one! it sucks that it happened, but its his own fault for leaving it with the top down and no hood lock! the world we live in is way different then how it was when our grand fathers use to live! you cant leave you car unlocked anymore!

A kill switch might have been moot, the theiving bastards hot wired the thing under the hood, that pretty much by-passes everything (I saw the security cam video). A lock on the hood and a device like the club might have been more help here.

  14. The club does not work. It takes 20 sec. to hacksaw thru a steering wheel. I use the Unbreakable Auto Lock, and never leave my car alone.

  15. Just saw the video. I would NEVER park my car behind anywhere and leave it. The Auto Lock would have stopped this.

I am going to go a bit against the grain here. I never locked my convertibles. Ever.

Here is my reasoning. If they want in the car, they are getting. And with a convertible, you don't need slim jims, or bust windows or anything. Just a knife. I have had friends that lost shit like that too. So I never kept anything nice in my convertible, and always left it unlocked.

However, a Lo-jack or at least an alarm when you have something as nice as that car would have been a very smart investment. I am curious to see what the rest of that parking lot looked like though. Those guys were crawling all over that car to take it.

Good one that I never thought about.

I hate to hear about anyone having his car stolen but it serves as a reminder to all of us that we need to make the cars harder to steal for the average thief.

The Impala rag top theft above shows that a locking hood, some sort of ignition kill and if you have an electric fuel pump a hidden switch in the line (or extra switch in the line) would hinder or cause the potential thief to look further afield for something easier to nab.

I'm not a fan of laying frame but that seems to be one potential anti theft device if the power to the compressors can easily be disabled. They might be able to start the car but if they can't get it to air up they aren't going anywhere.

  20. Untill Calif makes it a harsher offence for GTA its going to keep happening this time its a few hours in jail watch the show out of LA county they set and joke with the thiefs thats sad if you look at the film a cut off wouldnt helped they wired from the Batt to the coil. 1. lock the hood down and a 2. Harbor fright Batt cutoff in the grill
with a removable key would have stopped this very sad loss.

The club works if the person who wants to steal the car doesn't happen to be carrying a hack saw in their pocket.

All anti theft devices and methods are only deterents, none are foolproof. If a theif has made preperations to defeat a chosen anti theft method, they will most likely be successful.

"Hidden Kill switches" are only good if they do what they say...Kill!
they need to be designed to kill the theif, or they just become the owners PITA

with the amount of Auto theft and in the "special vehicle" type of theft..I dont think the law enforcement is geared to deal with it, and they may even be a part of the problem.

strange that these cars just disapear, never to be heard from or seen again, for the most part that is.

Whenever I hear "I just pull off the coil wire and take it with me.", it makes me think that that person knows nothing about how a car operates. You can keep your coil wire as a souvenir while I just yank a plug wire to substitute it and drive away on 7 cylinders while laughing all the way to the rented alley garage/chop shop. Pulling the coil wire is bad advice, don't be a tightwad and spend a little money on something more secure.

If you're going to pull the coil wire, make yourself a fake one with a piece of vacuum tubing and two boots, so it looks like there is a coil wire on it.

A hidden switch in the wiring that actually grounds the coil works well, because even if they take a piece of wire with two alligator clips to connect the coil to the battery, it still won't start because the coil is still grounded. They would have to clip the wires on the coil, and most thieves probably can't figure that one out.

Ditching the mechanical fuel pump in favor of an electric one is also a good idea, mount it in an inaccessible/invisible place, maybe above the tank, with concealed wiring. Kill switch in the wiring, gut a stock pump, install it, run the fuel lines in/out of it so it looks stock, scumbags will NEVER figure that one out.

Insurance scam is another possibility. The article said he had just got the car back, although not from where, and had it for four hours. Maybe it was back from the restoration shop, and he had fallen on hard times before the final bill came in of the $120,000 total that he had dropped on it. And he needed that money back, so...

I always like how one guy says "get a club" then another comes along and says the steering wheel can be cut. the next guy say pull the coil wire and another says he'd just pull a spark plug wire and use that. battery cut out with a removeable key? well they'll just tow it.

I've been leaving one of my classics outside while doing some rearranging in my shop. the battery is out and the fuel line is disconnected to the carb from some fiddling I was doing earlier so no one will be driving it away.

after all these car theft threads lately I chained it to a pole. yeah... you could cut the chain. shut up.

Another way would be to use the dash cig lighter to ground out the coil..... Unplug the hot wire behind the lighter socket and tape it up.. Hook up a wire long to reach the coil... Add eyelets on both ends of the wire.... Attach one end on the back of the lighter socket and the other end on the neg. (-) side of the coil. Press the lighter into the socket and that grounds out the coil... Pull the lighter out and your ready to start the car. Once the lighter is pressed in, it won't pop out until you pull it out.. This is an easy kill switch guys..... The only problem is, your lighter won't work... Big deal!! Flick your Bic if you want to light up a Marlboro... Like I do.... :D

You need to have insurance to drive it on the road and regardless should have BEFORE you take possession, not after. If you already have auto insurance all it takes is a simple phone call to get a car added. What kind of idiot would take a $100k car our for a first drive to a bar, park it in an alley and leave it if didn't even have insurance. If he didn't have insurance, then he is an even bigger fool.

Plus, maybe he has owned the car for a while, had it being restored for the last year, got way over his head in it and now can't sell it for near what he has in it and figures maybe the insurance co. can cover his mistake. Insurance fraud on autos is pretty common.

Maybe this is all on the up, but I still think details aren't quite adding up.
