Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by REDDOG, Jan 25, 2005.

  1. my water pump went out on my 235, i got one at NAPA, but it has a bigger(wider 5/8) belt pully, was wondering if i got the wrong one or will another year model have the thin bemt pulley i need???????????????

I was thinking they were s'posed to have the wide belt pulleys... but that was a long time ago that I dealt with my 235.

Where ya been, Reddog? Haven't seen/heard from you much lately!

  3. the new one ijust bought takes a wider belt, the old one that went bad takes the narrow belt,

ive been busy with the kiddo, and building race cars, hows the wife and kid doing?

Take it back to them, with the old one and tell them you need the water pump with the smaller width pulley... they should be able to reference the number and get you the part....

Or... ask them for the wider pulley for your Alternator/generator... and modify your alt/gen to work

I've bought those two parts not checked and gone back to parts stores multiple times for this and done it both ways....

The 216 had a wider belt. I don't think the waterpump will interchange with a 235?

There are at least two different types of water pumps for the 216/235 engines. My brother replaced his '39 216 with a '61 235 and the waterpumps look similar but (if my memory is correct) one connects both to the head and the block and one is solely mounted on the block.
Here's the various types of pumps:

The belt width was changed in 53 or 54, I can't remember. I do know that the wide belt pump from my 51 216 bolted right to the 54 235 and works great. If all else fails, you might be able to have the pulley pressed off an swapped to the new pump.
