im looking for some pics of engine parts done in chrome powdercoat,i heard it looks good like polished aluminum, did a search but no good pics thanks,MERRELL
there is a guy in Fernley Nv. that does chrome powder coat - on the whole engine block - looks just like chrome - works out of his home - was working on 2 1953 ford pick ups and had done both engine blocks - ja**
Chrome powdercoating will look 'good' depending on who's doing it...I've seen some look like aluminum, some look like **** warmed over...I've never seen any even approach the shinyness of real chrome. R-
My customers like the 'chrome powdercoat' but does not even resemble real chrome. It has to be clear coated ,and that takes away some of the shine. It does resemble aluminum. That transmission is a good example. There is a paint process that more closely resembles chrome, but it dosen't hold up very well.
I own a powder coating operation and what we found out is that the brand of powder makes a difference to, we tried probably 4 different manufactures and found one that has turned out awesome for us! Here are a few pix of some caddy valve covers we did.
whats the cost compared to a single color - gloss black for example? I know its difficult to generalize it? does this require a black base or a clear? I dont own a powder company or have any interest in competing for business. I work with powder pricing daily at work for industrial applications and am just interested how much more the materials / process runs compared to standard black
That's the best job I have seen, on the valve covers. Would you share the name of the brand of powder you used on them? I just do stuff in my garage, so I would not be compe***ion for your work. thanks,
I keep telling other powder coaters its all in the powder! All of our powder comes from NIC and they make most of it as its ordered, they only stock colors that they sell a lot of. The chromes and metallics they will actually shoot some samples and to see how they turn out before they ship them. The last time we ordered chrome powder it took a week and a half because they weren't happy with how the finished product looked, now that's how quality control should be done! We use their ceramic high temp exhaust coating also and it's some kick *** stuff! Same ceramic coating Edelbrock uses on their parts!
The chrome is a single stage, no clear required. You have to get set up with NIC as a dealer/distributor to buy from them (no big deal) their prices are decent to! They have over 2500 colors available for powder! some really wild stuff!
I worked in a powder shop about 14 years ago, that is by far the best chrome powder job I have ever seen. Keep up the good work man!
The valve covers look good. I had a pc. of a 53 Buick grill section done locally just to see what it would look like and it came out looking like gray paint.
I like the idea... but everything I have seen here gives it either a silver paint, aluminum, or terribly polished chrome look. No offense to those that shot it. Chrome is tough to replace.
I would upgrade that to; Impossible to replace. Chrome powder coat? You mean like spoil proof bananas? Chrome will last for many decades. Powder coat, might last for a few years at best if not exposed to the exposure to driving hazards, road rocks, etc. It fades and chips just like any other organic coating.
I agree, real chrome is better, but I have to apply it for my customers, I dont think I would use it on any of my parts. The chrome powder coat is by far the worst for durability in my opinion, doesnt hold up as well as the other colors. I dont recommend the chrome on engine parts because of the chemicals used around those parts. Our shop will not do rims in this chrome powder! We have done bumpers that have stood up fairly well. We have our own technique when applying the chrome powder only, little different than the other colors.
^^^^^ X2. I would understand a spoke wheel like Craiger would not be a good wheel to do. But for Plain Jane Stock Steel wheels would be killer.
We used to get chrome powdercoat wheels for stock car racing. If you get brake fluid or whatever on them, they stain. There is no way to polish or clean the stain. Polish will make a black stain. They look good at first, but I know better now.
