I'm getting ready to start looking around town for a shop to spray silver metalflake on the roof my 63 Galaxie moredoor. Can anyone give me an idea of about what something like that would cost? I plan on getting estimates from a few shops, but was just wondering about what it "should" cost so I can try to not get taken for a ride.

  2. You can buy a cheap compressor and gun, also the paint and thinners you need, and do it yourself, for way less than a shop will charge you. This one was done in my shed, my first flake job. Did the wheels and steering wheel at the same time. Two coats of base colour, two coats of flake, six coats of clear.

  3. To get the right look on a metalflake job, where the flake looks deeply buried beneath the clear, there is a fairly long and involved process.
    1. repair and primer the roof
    2. apply a base color
3.apply metalflake, usually suspended in clear or similar
4.clear over the metalflake to seal it
    5. blocksand the clear to get rid of the rough appearance
    6. apply candy color over the sealed metalflake
    7.clear over the candy
    8. block sand to get rid of any imperfections
    9. buff and polish to a high lustre
    10. step back and say ''that looks f#*king sweet!"

all this material costs bulk $$$$ and there is a lot of time to do it right, this costs money too.

good jobs arent cheap, and cheap jobs arent good.(generally)

Painting is way easier than one who has never done it might imagine....especially if you are able to use lacquers.

Yep, to have a shop do it in this way is going to be in the $1k range to start around here.
