My son and I were at Culvers Cruise night last night with the Corvair, checking out the cars. It's our little father son thing we do, he loves it.

I saw this in the back of one of the cars and my jaw dropped and my son laughed! Is this an authentic car seat from back in the day? Or is it just for dolls? It's hard to believe someone would put a child in one.

Better than Mom or Dad beating the piss out of you with the back of their arm every time they panic stop!

Shane, That car seat is the real deal. As I recall , I had one that looked very close to that one, when my oldest girl was very young, 40 years ago. I also liked the long roof Chev ,it's about as old as the car seat.

    Actually, that's a 54 Pontiac.

When my son was born in 1960, that's all there was available for a baby and it was hooked over the front seat of my new 60 Pontiac Catalina hardtop when he was old enough to sit up. We had the stripped down version without any of the doo-dads on it. As he got older and was able to touch the front seat with his shoes, he rubbed them back and forth so much it wore a hole in the seat covers.

I stood up in the middle of the front seat between Mom and Dad in the '37 Flatback Tudor. There was room for my feet in the center, and I leaned back between the seat backs, right in the center. Heck, we weren't goin' out to have a wreck!
(popular thinking at the time..."It couldn't happen to US!")
I remember one time some drunk guy rear-ended my Dad, not serious, the Ford spring steel bumper bounced the guy's car back like a tennis ball. Dad jumped out, pulled the guy out of his car, and shook him like a rag doll. (the guy was big, too...) Dad reprimanded him about drunk driving, and the fact his 'little boy' was riding in the car, like the guy planned it. How times have changed!

  11. Hell ya. had my son in one like that when I blew the doors off a SS 396 chevelle on a top end blast 130+ in a 48 plymouth
had to hang two of them for my twin daughters. they were considered very safe during that era. nothing to laugh at.
what I laugh at is a customer has a 64 F-250 4x4. when they go camping they have to take two cars because you can't put a car seat in the front seat

I'm 47 and my dad says I stood up in the front seat between he and mom. When he hit the brakes, he would shoot his right arm out to the right to keep me from flying forward. The reason I know this is, when I was in my late teens, dad hit the brakes pretty hard and his arm shot out from instinct and a conditioned response from the years I stood by him in the front seat.

When I was around 6, my dad put a cushion on a piece of plywood installed on the bed rails inside a bed cap (camper shell). That's where my younger brother and I rode when we went on camping trips. Even had a wired intercom between the cab and the camper!

    Those were the days..............

I remember my car seat actually belted in to the back seat, so it was slightly larger and more sophisticated (early 1970s) but it was made out of blue vinyl over straight-up foam rubber--over chrome, yes chrome, tubing.

I used to burn the **** out of myself on that chrome, but that was the '70s.

    "Hey, kid, don't touch that."

And: "You stay in the car; I'm only going in for a minute."

Hell, I think the seats of the early 70's were a little better, but it didn't matter. Mom has always said there wasn't a car seat I couldn't get out of! I guess my favorite activity was pulling the E-brake handle that stuck up between their bucket seats! Mom learned to handle the car in a rear wheel skid and all was good!

I rememeber seeing one that looked like an old metal tractor seat with some tricycle handle bars hooked to it. Spooky stuff. But then again I remember we always used to ride on the rear package shelf and we are still breathing today.

I think everyone should have to learn to drive a mid '50's car 3 speed on the tree to get their license. People would have more respect and skills when driving their "eco-turds" today.

  18. Hell, I just stood in the back of the old '59 Buick. Dad would always yell at us to sit down. Ha Ha! those were the days.

My car seat was a cardboard box from the Publix grocery store so I could see out. It has nothing to do with my st-stutter from hitting the windshield after my mom panicstopped.
My sister got a fancy version of the one in the OP. Hers was pink. Brat.

  22. you young whipper snappers ain't ever seen/ done anything dangerous :D:eek::rolleyes:

.. us grey beards have done all the scary stuff and lived thru it and now have made it safe for your mamby pamby generation
geez whats next seat belts , air bags , rear view cameras , side impact reinforcement, radial tires , crush zone bodies, speed limits , seat backs that stay in place ,safety gl***, GPS , cellphone

we did not have car seats in our family we were safe by sibling pressure i have 5 brothers )(we still do not like riding very far together )
... we were wedged tight in the back seat and then later in the rear floor area of various station wagons ... dogs ,luggage , groceries
only the kids under 3 ever were allowed in the front seat ..for safety sake

Well I guess you aren't very old then . When I was a small boy that is what I sat in ! Sat right up front next to my Mom & Dad ! Looks like I made it OK ! Just shows you how well made the cars were back then and how the cars today all depend on air bags to save your *** !
We also had small toys to swallow , stuck our fingers in the wall sockets , burnt our hands on the hot stove and even rode bikes with NO helmets or anything else . Just thick how we lived and made it till now .
Now ask this question , how come we have all this safety things for our children that we pay an arm and a leg for and because the law says we do and we still have children hurt bad ?

I use to ride in on of those deals, but mine has a small steering wheel attached and a horn ****on that squeeked. I use to drive the old man nuts with the horn. Somehow it suddenly stopped working. Guess the old man gave it an upgrade to silent mode. lol

We didnt have car seats but my moms right arm was quicker than any airbag in an emergency stop! Im in my 30's and she'll still swing that arm out there like shes gonna hold my big *** from hitting the dash anytime she has to stop fast.

Apparently, I was notorious for car seat "jailbreaks"-but one particular incident stands out that my mom likes to tell:

We had a 70 malibu when I was little. My mom had me in the c****at, and two or three piglets in burlap sacks (sitting on the floor in the back-how many would stuff pigs into a chevelle now?). Long story short, I let at least two of them loose:) Supposedly, I caused quite a distraction, although, I believe that the PIGS were the distraction-I just get blamed for them freaking out.

I was born in 77, so car seats were around. My mom drove a shorty 79 Ford Econoline van, dad "customized" the interior with orange **** carpeting and a bed. Only two seats up front, so my sister and I rode in a playpen sitting between the seats and bed.

  30. Walkie talkies, a topper and 3000 miles of vacation when I was 7. Me and the dog rode in back.
