VooDoo Larry is in the vanguard of kustomizers that not only build some great old school rides, but live the lifestyle at the same time. His cars include the VooDoo Kreeper, VooDoo Diablo, and, the knock-out VooDoo Idol. Larry & I got together at the Leadsled in Salina for a GREAT Interview that contains many, many stories that you'll hear on the Hall Of Fame Legends Series...so, I wanted to let my H.A.M.B. friends here this "origin" tale to start off with. In this story from Larry, I wanted to find out what shifted his focus into cars in the beginning, AND into building kustoms as cool as he does. Larry's got a great future ahead in our Industry, and is definetly one of the new breed of builders to watch ! Just click-on, listen, and enjoy: http://www.legends.thewwbc.net/gpage138.html Jonnie King www.legends.thewwbc.net PS: IT WAS G-R-E-A-T MEETING MANY OF YOU IN SALINA ! Many thanks for the kind compliments ! Wish we'd had an extra day !
Many sincere thanks ! I missed SO many people in Salina, 'cause the park was 3 times bigger than the old one (which is good) ! Tried to get to everybody, but wasn't able to accomplish all I wanted. NOW, if we had that "Extra Day"...mebbe next year, my friend. Yes, Larry really pours his heart & soul into everything he does...deserves all the credit that he gets for sure. JK
I met Larry and his lovely wife in Detroit a few years back. We hung out the whole time, laughed our ***es off and had one hell of a time!! I think he is a very talented builder. Pretty much self taught. I have tons of respect for him. ******Knuckles
i met him and went to his first open house. i remember seein the kreep at the world of wheels. that was when i made the change from muscle cars to kustoms. talked quite a bit about pin stripping. hes a good guy. then i moved to texas. missed the 2nd open house. this year 2
Bill Hines, his wife, and, son Mike have all been dealing with pneumonia and didn't make the trip to Salina this year. Pray that they all get well and can join us next year. Larry's car was parked next to Jack Walker's, just behind the KKOA Event Booth where Paul LeMat, George Barris, Linda Vaughn, and John D'Agostino were located. JK
Spent some time in Detroit on set up night a couple years ago Looking at Larrys Winfield tribute car and he was a really cool guy. Invited me over to look at it up close. The best was when Gene came over and we both were kinda in awe. Larry is much cooler than the OSR photos lead you to believe. If you see him at a show check his stuff out, nice work , some cool ideas, and a nice family guy to boot!
I can only echo what has already been posted. Larry took the time at Detroit to personally show me details of his car, and to answer all my questions about how they were performed. A real stand-up guy!
I had the opportunity to meet Larry last year. He is a great guy that bleeds Kustoms and Hot Rods. It is kool to see Larry as one of the next legendary builders. We are blessed to have guys like Larry blasting Kustoms into the future. It is going to be a kool ride.... Thanks Johnnie for the interview and keeping up with your site. Very Important tool to keep the Kustom thing rolling. Keep up the hard work. Happy Trails, Mick
The other day I was watching a video I shot at the Ducktail Run in 2001 and in part of it I'm riding shotgun in Mike Teal's Riviera (with a ford roof) and we stop to talk to Larry. I forgot how cool he was. I have to agree OSR seems to paint him as a bad *** don't give a **** stand offish kinda guy. Glad to see he's really not changed from the nice guy he was.
Mick, again, thanks for your kind words. It was great seeing you in Salina ! Sorry we didn't have much time, but hope your trip home was a safe one. AND, I know you're keeping the Kustom Tradition alive & well in Oklahoma ! It's all a part of the "total package" that makes what all of us here logging onto the H.A.M.B. are all about: The roots of rods & kustoms were All-American iron, a "family" of like-minded hot rodders, a caring & concern for all of those in our "family", and helping them and supporting them whenever, and wherever, we could. God bless America...and all of those who keep true to the roots of where we came from. VooDoo Larry is definetly a part of the fabric of our roots...100% ! JK www.legends.thewwbc.net
I met larry at Chicago show in the winter and talked for a little bit. About two weeks later I was in his shop gettin parts and he was given me lots of info to get me going on my first rod build. He is one hell of a guy.
chop & toby... Larry's is not only a super-great guy, but his open house this year was packed with so many Rods & Kustoms that you almost had to park in the next town over and walk back to see & enjoy all of the rides in attendance ! JK
2015 UPDATE FOR MY FRIENDS HERE AT THE H.A.M.B... Over the last few weeks, since George Barris' death, I've been thinking about all of the GREAT work VooDoo Larry has done on his "VooDoo Sahara" Tribute to George's "Golden Sahara", and I realized that many of you have seen and met Larry since we did this Interview about his "early year's" back in 2010...BUT, you never got the chance to HEAR this story since I first Posted the Thread in those days. SO, I went back, updated some of the Info on the Page, and thought I'd give those that missed it a chance to hear Larry talking about those early year's, how it all began, and, how he got "from-there-to-here" ! Larry is a fantastic guy, slaps a mean stand-up b***, and, is spot-on with all his cool info in this great Interview !! Here's the Link that'll get you there...ENJOY ! http://www.legends.thewwbc.net/gpage138.html Thanks again, Larry...see you in Salina next year ! Jonnie www.legends.thewwbc.net
Johnboy34, You're welcome ! Larry is such a fantastic visionary with each and every build. I love the part of this Interview that deals with his first car: a '51 Buick...fun to listen to his early, simple way to get it done ! http://www.legends.thewwbc.net/gpage138.html JK www.legends.thewwbc.net
georgeg... Man ! Many thanks for that pic ! Would love to see that in-person ! Larry's stuff is always so cool, it's almost like "concept" car-styled...and he talks about his progression from one-level-to-the-next in this story: http://www.legends.thewwbc.net/gpage138.html Thanks again, georgeg !
