i'm about ready to get this little motor fired off. my question is, can anybody provide a simple, basic schematic for wiring an old point style distributor and starter on a smallblock chevy? not even an alternator on it yet.. all i want is to be able to light her up and hear a little noise. and frankly, wiring is not my strong suit. everytime i got a stupid question, you guys come through for me! i'm keepin my fingers crossed that this holds true now that i'm so close..
Need a toggle switch to put 12 v to plus side of coil. Neg side of coil goes to points/cond starter push switch to inside small terminal on the solenoid marked S. That will crank it over as you hold the push ****on in. a little gas....Vrooom If auto or stick, be careful without a trans safety switch. Bad stuff happens a lot.
Eliminating the push ****on switch and using a screwdriver to momentarily connect the main starter terminal to the solenoid terminal is also acceptable and VERY traditional. vic
outstanding!! you guys are the best. i figure once it run, i can plumb th brakes..... is that wrong of me?.. thanks again for answerin my stewpit questions. its almost like you guys WANT me to piss off the neighbors.
What does rudimentary mean. If you can write a word like that you should be able to wire up anything...................
right you are! you'd never know it nowadays but, there was a time when i couldn't spell rudimentary..... somebody taught me... just like you guys are adoin now... only with lektrisity!
ok dammit, this worked when i test fired the motor, now i'm ready to spin it around the block for the 1st time and the exact same wiring setup wont fire! WTF?! it lights or tries too with the starter ****on engaged but the damn thing doesnt seem to be gettin any electricity through the toggle switch.... any ideas?
Got a test light? Put one end to good ground, the other end to the NEG side of coil. Spin it over, and the light should be blinking...meaning the points are working and getting power. If you don't have a resistor on the hot side of coil, and don't have an internally resisted coil...it could be that the points are burned up. Look to see if the movable point arm is heat-discolored.
i do have a resistor on the toggle switch wire, even have a byp*** on the starter ****on to fire it easier. it lights with the ****on but as soon as i let go it loses electricity goin through the switch. runnin 12 gauge wire on the whole thing. should i continuity test the resistor and the switch? i'll check the coil and points right now and let ya know...
