trouble with those is you have no idea where tdc is for a starting point. you mite try fabbing a timing pointer by removing bottom rt timing cover bolt drilling a hole in the head and brazing on a wire pointer. you can then CAREFULLY snake an appropriately bent stiffwire down the #1 hole (sparkplug that is) and slowly turn over engine with crankpulley bolt. you can get a pretty good idea where tdc is that way and make a corresponding mark on the crankpulley. use an advance timing lite to get a handle on where your initial timing is at and your advance

Thanks guys... I figured it'd be a pain... any idea what the timing (provided I fabricate a setup as has been described) should be set at?
There's no vacuum advance on this dist.
So where I set it is where it'll run.

Do not use feeler or anything visual to find TDC. Search "interference method" and "TDC", I posted a way that is actually accurate and will take maybe 5 minutes. Mark TDC against a pointer, perhaps a stud in one of the lower timing cover bolt holes. One of the posts should have easy instructions for marking off degrees on pulley edge without math or trickery, too.
The Mallory has no easy way of setting preliminary timing like the stocker does.
Put it in middle of travel where it will probably start and run, set at 4 degrees static using your new marks and timing light. Find out how much total timing the M has, rev enginr up to 2,000 with timing light...it should be all in by around there or your engine isn't going to run right.
