So I have been driving the Falcon a bunch this summer. I stole it from my old man earlier in the summer since I sold the truck. I have been having problems with the signal switch so I ordered a new replacement. I installed it this evening and everything seems to work just the way I expected it to work with one exception. With the ignition on everything works correctly. But with the ignition off if I step on the brake and turn the signal either left or right, that brake light goes out.

My old switch pretty much was junk, but I looked at the contacts and I really do believe that this is the correct function of the signal switch, but this is one combination that I didn't check when I was trying to get the old switch to work before I bought the new one.

Can any Falcon/Ford guys verify the function of the switch in this case for me. Again with the ignition off, if the switch is in the middle I get both brake lights, if I signal left the left brake light goes out - right stays lit, if I signal right the right light goes out and the left stays lit.

Makes sense to me. When the ignition is off, there is no power to the relay and it would be normally open (light off) so no light. had a 62 fairlane and the turn signals did not work at all when the ignition was off.

I just went out and tried the signals on my 63 Falcon and they work the same way.

Normal operation. The brake light signal goes through the turn signal switch, so when turning with the brake applied, the blinker works on the side being signaled, while the brake light is on solid on the opposite side.

That's right, it's operating correctly. Do you see a problem?

I had a 70 ford pick up. if with the ignition off you put on the four way flashers and a left turn signal the wipers would move to the flashers.

What prompted you to perform that test in the first place? Who cares if the turn signals dont work with the igintion off?

I was just running through every possible combination after installing the new turn signal switch to make sure that the function was right (the Ford wire colors are not so bold and I wasn't 100% positive I had all the wires in the right spots).

My assumption was that with the ignition off I would get brake lights both sides all the time, but like I say I never really checked normal function with the old switch, I was mainly focusing on trying to fix what I knew it was doing wrong.

Thanks guys for checking for me, like I said I had convinced myself that this had to be normal function for the switch -- the switch itself can't really tell if the ignition is on or off so it will always switch the brake light off. It sure is nice to get confirmation though from a bunch of great guys when you don't know for sure and start second guessing yourself.

Now, with no worries, I can button it up tonight when I get home from work and get back to driving :):):)
