Thinking about giving my banger the full treatment. Not overhead valves, but most everything else. Obviously lots of things to consider before going that route. I really don't want to do a v8 swap and would like to have something different. Kind of looking to take my survivor 29 A coupe and have it freeway able, change to juice brakes, and enjoy the car. Lets see other cars like this, give me the drawbacks, and your ideas. If you've gone this route, what kind of money have you spent and who did your work. Thinking about using H&H in La Crescenta, Ca. Bring it on.....
Just finished my setup in January '10. .100" over, Aftermarket rods, insert bearings, Stipe cam, Lion Speed head at 8:1, counterweighted crank, lightened flywheel, V-8 clutch, Mallory dist w/MSD ignition, modified Winfield intake w/Stromberg 97. Stock oiling. Machine work by Antique Engine Rebuilders in Skokie, Ill. I did all assembly and tuning. Dyno'd 66 hp at wheels. Strong running engine, driven over 2000 miles this year already. Reliable. All in a '31 Tudor. Next engine will be pressurized, and have forced induction. Ken Cleveland, Ohio
NICE! Thats similar to what I thinking of. Do you regret not pressurizing this engine? You sound satisfied, how are freeway cruising speeds? Bryan
Mine is a B with a counterbalanced crank and lightened flywheel. It has a Winfield SU-1R cam, stock pistons and valves, Winfield head, dual 81's, header and mallory ignition. It goes freeway speed no problem. I also put a V8 tranny behind it, along with juice brakes. I had the babbit done by a local guy here, my Dad and I put the engine together. Not into it much money short block wise, the speed equipment gets adding up.
This is exactly the kind of thing I'm hoping to do. I'm interested in how much power I can get out of a banger for hillclimbing and sprints, but without the engine becoming unusable on the road. I was thinking full oil pressure, inset bearings, maybe Brumfield head, 97s, etc. Wondering how far I could develop that... Or whether I should go straight for a Miller-Schofield OHV head with 2x 97s. But that's going to cost a bit.
You can get a shortblock B exchange from H&H for about 3k. Have them put in a good cam, get inserts with dipper rods and inserted mains. get the upgraded oil pump, install a good head about 6.5 to 7-1 and two 81 carbs. Run a Mallery Distb. B trans with v8 gears and you will have a lot of fun. Should cruse at 70 mph easy.--TV
Great advice. Stupid question... I'm assuming you mean a v8 geared rear end? Planning a meeting with H&H and want to be as informed as possible.
Model B: Counterbalanced crank, lightened flywheel, V8 pressure plate, (crank full balanced with pressure plate), dual carb intake (too much carb really), "high compression" head, Headers (stock cam but she still goes) Only thing I have left is to upgrade the rest of the drivetrain to be able to get it above Model A speeds. It's peppy, a lot more than the stock A (engine) I have.
It's true, you can. That's what behind the A in my T. Ford specialties adapter and V8 flywheel. Burns intake, 2 97's, Scintilla magneto, counterbalanced crank, tour grind cam, repop Winfield head. Sure would like to figure out a mechanical fuel pump to run on the A block.
.060 over, with touring cam, 7.5:1 Lion Speed Head, Reds Header and Weber 2 stage. I'm saving now for a Riley duel carb set up! She does real well!!
Cornboy.... Were you at Grants Pass last weekend? Good event! Piewagn.... Nicely done! If I don't get some opposition to this idea soon, I'll be modding the banger
That thing STILL has mud on it, and I went at it with the power washer. PA clay is tough stuff. btw, ID the passenger!
Corn Boy...where's your gas tank... It's in the trunk. An old Model T tank. Do you know where should it be?[/QUOTE] Should be in my stash...... You must be running an electric pump...d32
yep 'lectric. Sorry, the tank is currently in use. B-MAtt, The the world famous cookie maker, Denise. ?
Looking good pie wagon, have not seen you on the banger thread at all amigo. Yellow on yellow sets your car off quite nicely.-Weeks
Thanks Weeks!! Been lurkin' a bit, but not much time for anything else. Barely had the car out this summer. I'll head over to the banger thread and see what's goin' on! Thanks for the kind words fellas!!!
Got two of them 26 roadster pickup with played with b motor and 27 roadster with 28chev head modified to fit tee motor goes well. Big earthquake here so cant post pics at moment
