I'll have to find the source, but I know for a fact I read that some GM models came with wooden bumpers when supplied for miltary use (not regular duty). If it is on the internet, it must be true right?

That is a 1942 Olds. I took the photo at the High Desert Vintage Tin, Fun Run. The owner of the car drove it from Lake Havasu, AZ to Victorville, Ca. for the show and drove home with a trophy.

Front bumper is a '46. Just found one 2 weeks ago along with '50 single spinner and a 55? customline. About 1300kms away but are mine for the cost of getting them home. These were found on a dump at an historic cattle station. This dump has everything from horse and buggy up to 1970's cars.
The '46 Olds is GMH made.

My uncle Earl bought a 42 Olds couple just before he joined the Navy....up on blocks while he was gone - came back, made about three babies in two years...sold in with low miles and bought a Packard 4dr sedan. I recall pictures of the Olds in family album, and I always like the 'deco' appearance of the front end, but then I thought Edsels were attractive too.

That ad lists it as a Club Sedan. Anyone know what the word Club meant? I've heard of Club Coupes but never a Club Sedan.

A very rare car. Oldsmobile production ceased on 5<sup>th</sup> February 1942 due to WW2 and didn't recommence until 15<sup>th</sup> October 1945. Production then again shut down on 21<sup>st</sup> November 1945 and didn't recommence until 1<sup>st</sup> April 1946 due to United Auto Workers strike

Sorry, not quite correct even on the second time around...
The bright trim was not forbidden, nor were "plated parts painted over".
As fact, the chrome, nickel and copper was reserved for military use only. They were in short supply partially due to huge demand for war supplies production, partially due to some global sources were blocked due to war.
Thus the chrome nor nickel plating was not allowed on civilian supplies.
The steel parts were not plated in the first place but merely painted.
It had actually nothing to do with the wartime illumination blackout, only saving precious metals, but since no shine, common people started calling it "blackout" trim. (You shoulda known this, but I had to tell it...)

This isn't the first time I've heard this. For example, "the demand for overdrive transmissions went south after the introduction of automatic transmissions as an option on all car lines".

Who ever thought that an automatic 4 speed was more efficient than a manual 3 speed? If the top gear is 1.00:1 you're not doing any better at cruise speed, and I doubt the extra ratio in the middle will make up for the slippage taking place in the torus/torque converter.

Salesmen talk up a lot of mundane features as thrilling breakthroughs. To me the age of the automatic is one of the worst "advancements" of the automobile.

Rare car. I have those production figures at home. Have a photo of rarer woodie wagon. Looks like a 76 or 78 model going by front wrap around bar.

Most car makers started producing their 1942 models in the fall of 1941. The US entered WW2 in December 1941 and starting in January 1942, car makers were required to conserve chromium, copper and nickel. This meant replacing chrome plated trim with painted trim. Some existing stocks of chrome or stainless parts were painted so all the trim on the car would match.

Car production was halted in April and all unsold cars were put into bonded warehouses. In order to buy a new car, you had to get permission from the government. This explains the ad that lays out the requirements. Doctors, vets and others essential workers had priority.
