Help identifying 49 merc rearend

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Chopshop13, Aug 1, 2010.

  1. [IMG]Im considering buying this rearend from my local auction site. Ive done a bit of reading up on it, and i can't work out if this is whats refered to as a ****er rearend.

The owner sais its from a sedan, but with the gearing and the look of the housing im a little confused...

    Heres the listing:
1949 Mercury diff in good condition, has got brand new brakes fitted. 1390mm between brake drums, 5 stud, ratio 4.27
    PCD= 5.5'

    Acording to owner:
The width to outside of drums would be 61"
The drums are aprox 12" OD

    Any Thoughts?

It is a ****er style (aka Salisbury) and looks like what would be under a '49 - '51 Merc. Fords used the removable third member type in p***enger cars (except sta wgn, which used ****er) but all the Mercs and pickups had ****ers.

And that ratio was most likely from a car with OD.

Looks like it might also be from an F1. They were about that width (60.5") and 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern as well. The F1 has spring spacing of 40" on center. If the Merc and F1 are basically the same, I wouldn't pay a premium for the Merc because the F1 are plentiful.

  5. Thanks Ray

So i supose my next question for anyone reading is would you run this in a model A hotrod, Its going to be channeled on '76 F1 wheels in the rear, 60.5" wide, not sure of the wheels backspacing, planning on running 7.50x16 tyres.
    Will run a N/A flathead.

    Any thoughts?

I used a 52 Ford station wagon rear end [****er] with shortened an resplined F1 axles, for my deuce tub. [wagons where narrower]. Done by Cooks Machine in L.A. You could do that stuff cheep back then [1958].

I just picked 2 of them up right now, I'm almost certain they're F-1, due to the fact that the spring mounts are on the top rather then on bottom like yours, so your's is most likely p***anger car. I do believe the F-1's have shorter gear ratio aswell!

With the pads under the axle tubes ... it is a Mercury. F-1's have the pads on top of the tube. I would not pay much at all. :D
In fact, I have a couple of F-1 rear ends I will GIVE YOU ...
    :D

A much better choice ( IMHO ) for the Model A would be a 57/72 F-100 ... because it is a 9 inch ... the center sections are removable and parts are way easier to find.

  9. Thanks Duece but i picked it up allready cheap enough, good condition so not worried. I have searched the net and found some replacement parts should i need them.

  10. Would the 5 on 5.5 be correct given that its a merc rearend? did the fords have 5 on 4.5? and does anyone have expreience with the strength of these?

  11. Yes 5x5 1/2" if it's 49-51. It's a Dana 41. F-100s also had Danas.

Don't know what parts you have found but 49-51 Merc brake drums are 11 inch ID and hard to find. Suggest you remove and measure them. Max. cut is .060 in.
