need help guys have a 46 ford weekend cruiser/moonshiner w a 50 model v8 engine bored /stroked to 295 inches isky 88 navarro heads, navarro 4b intake 395 holley reds headers/electric cutouts davis performance electronic dizzy ross forged pistons with 7 cylinders at 170# and 1 at 70 after the little problem with the electric fan relay while i am fixing the got hot boo boo, i want to change cams out as well .because of the extra inches ,the isky has almost no noticable lope at idle. and i need to sound goood dont want wild radical just attention getting 30/30ish thump performance not as important as dependability and aggressive sounding idle any suggestions on a cam without excessive lift, spring pressures, etc i have definately plenty of compression to bleed off comp thumper maybe very few flatheads around here ,almost none hot rodded ,to listen to thanks
I have a L 100 from cam techniques (I think) In my 284. I cant imagine wanting anything much lopier. I t runs good with the only problem being it wont chug along in high gear under about 30 mphi. i should stil hve the cam card which would more info if your interested.
The 400 jr and L100 are too much cam for what you want. Try a 1007B...Excellent mid range and lopey idle.
I had isky's "3/4" cam. at the time is was one step below the 400.... Sounded GREAT and good mileage... but that was on a stock stroke with bored holes...if I was stroked I probably would have went 400 jr = "full race"
I just saw in a magazine that Comp has a thumper for flatheads. At first they only had 'em for sb fords an chevys, now they got them for some vintage stuff. Usually offered in 2 flavors= bad*** and badderbad***. Look on YouTube for some sights and sounds of Thumprs, they have that certain something that I think that you are looking for. I think there is one on there of a flattie with the Isky 400jr also
I also remember the book. Don't 'pad' the second one, Youngblood...(book-familiar insider's joke) Try and beware of the 'modern, computer-designed' cams. Last one I built (3/8"X3/8" 296) went into a '40 Ford tudor sedan. The owner had a "new grind", an Isky 'pro-something or other. Talk about taming the wild beast! After break-in, I replaced it with a Weber F2. Wham! Snap! Zowie! Now it had power...
I posted the results of a build-up of a 49 Merc with an L100 the other day, with a dyno sheet and complete specs. Search for L100 and the data is there, but the short stroke is that the L100 works great on a 276-incher and should work even better on your big motor.
I have an Isky # 808800 and like it. http://www.flatlanderracing.com/iskycamsfordflat.html http://www.bluecollarperformance.com/808800.html
Potvin: 3/4 .329 lift 256 duration super 3/4 .357 lift 270 duration 3/8 .375 lift 270 duration Schneider: 260F .326 lift 260 duration 260F-1 .355 lift 260 duration 270F .365 lift 270 duration 270F-1 .395 lift 270 duration Isky: 400jr .400 lift 258 duration My opinion on flathead cams is "open the valve as far as you can" because with all the turns the air and exhaust have to take through those (less than ideal) ports getting the valve out of the way could only help. Everyone says for the street you want a lower duration than a race cam. So with my lift theory and the standard rule of thumb for duration I would go with the Isky 400jr. After talking with some folks about their 400jr cams they all say its fine on the street and has good power, not to mention the killer sound! One of they guys I talked to was running a 239 and said bothe low end and top end power were great. The potvin 3/8 sounds cool as well and the few guys Ive talked to about it say it has good power. Have not heard any Schneider cams but I would say the 270F would be similar those cams. FYI: Some of these specs came from Flathead Jacks online catalog (of which I dont order from because he was an a## hole to me when I was about 16. I saw him at a goodguys show and wanted to get a catalog from him and talk flatheads with him for a second and he told me I had to bring my Dad over if I wanted a catalog!)
this is fun have been somewhat surprised how much the extra inches calmed my isky 88 idle even with probably 10-1 compression which was kinda unintended would love to see specs on the L100 thanks HAWK
The Potvin 3/8 is one heck of a good cam -- just put one from 'Pete' in a 276 cube motor . . . has a nice/rough idle and really pulls well. Has tons of torque, which is really good for a street engine. Hard cam to beat in my opinion.
The company that ground my L100 is Cam Techniques in Sarasota, Florida. The gent who owns it is Dave Generous, and the phone number is (941) 727-5552. Dave is very knowledgable and easy to work with; been doing this for a long time.
Here's what I have for the L100: LIFT: .375" DUR: int 270* exh 260* (246* & 238* @ .050") LSA: 112* CL: 108* LASH: .016"
from what ive read here after listening to to a bunch of youtube clips guess im down to L100 isky 400jr 3/8 potvin ???
The 1007B has something none of those other cams have. A higher rate of lift. This equals more mid range power where you need it with a street engine. "Been in the cam business 59 years"
One thing is for sure . . . I'd trust Pete with my 'CAM Life' If he recommends the 1007B, you can bet it will be an excellent choice for your particular combination.
CAM Techniques makes the L100 - which is a great cam . . . Pete is not with CAM Techniques - he has his own company and he is more than a pleasure to work with!
oops its obvious im new i guess without a company being mentioned thought 1007b was a variant of L100 sorry Pete hope we can talk soon
