So I've been doing some work with Trace and the Long Beach Motorama and I gotta say there is some amazing stuff in the works for this show.. One of them being the wall of legends.. Heres a write up from the LB Motorama Blog.. www.longbeachmotorama.blogspot.com WALL OF LEGENDS: Wall of Legends is a 3 dimensional display of America’s first generation of Car Kustomizers. These men created a sport and lifestyle all in their young teenage years; for all of us to enjoy and p*** on. We have captured the life they have given to the sport through the casting of their hand in repose. Some hold lead; while another holds an apple, some hold paint guns while another pin stripes. The hand is mounted on a shelf/wall plaque and made of walnut. Atop the casted form is a picture of the kid builder, in most cases showing him doing what he loves; Kustomizing. Below the shelf is the engraved plaque stating name-surname/***le and year of induction. There will be 11 of these extraordinarily creative individuals on the Wall of Legends display. 1. Bill “The Lead Slinger” Hines 2. Dean “The Striper Kid” Jefferies 3. Frank De Rosa Sr. 4. Joe “Candy Apple Red” Bailon 5. **** “Lil Peep” Jackson 6. Hershel “Jr.” Conway 7. George “King of Kustomizers” Barris 8. Gene Winfield 9. Sam Foose 10. Sam Barris 11. Larry Watson As the years go on we will be adding first generation builders from the Mid-West, South West and East Coast. So if you know one of these Legends please forward their contact information so we can include as many of them as possible. Once the hands are casted; the concrete form is stored in a welded metal vault with the builders name and any information they want engraved on the outside. This is to ensure that the next civilization to walk and drive on this earth knows that these men, in our time, did this, and we loved them for it! Dean Jeffries Hand
You should add Mike Clines, the pin stripper in Sacramento. He grew up in Long Beach and pin stripped and painted a lot of the cars from the Long Beach area. He also did some work with Larry Watson.
Evel are they actual casts of their hands? If so how does that work with someone like Sam Barris who hasn't been with us for quite some time? Really neat display regardless.
There will be a stand in hand someone the same age of when they p***ed. He's trying to get everyone he can thats alive cause like we saw in the last weeks you never know whats going to happen.. The cool thing is were going to do George's hand holding a RollieFlex Camera.. I'll post pixs of the progress..
Looks cool but there are a couple serious names that are not on that list. We are talkin customizers arent we ?
I think its just a list, in no real order. Obviously Sam would be a little higher than 10 if that was the case. That is really cool. I guess we are calling the first generation from the 40's to the 60's and the second from the 70's-80's and the third is right now? very cool indeed.
let's add the most influential painter you never heard of... Joe Andersen... "COLORS by Joe Andersen." firsts included: first fade job, panel, lace, cobwebs. painted the s&h red stamp special and roland leong's Hawaiian funny car. also painted the 2 time AMBR winner "invader", and a slew of "show rods" including the "pink panther" not to mention a ton of street customs from his los angeles based shop. also the creator of the "spider cap"... i"ll shoot you his info...
Yo Altered, wasnt the 1st lace job thought to be on Doug Carneys GP done by Larry Watson in 63? i also thought he did the 1st panel job on a Renegades car in 57? and also thought he did the 1st cob webbing.......... am i so wrong? Andeson is rad anyway.
bonez... i inadvertently added 'panel'... my brain was moving a mile a minute... as for the rest, If you ask joe, he'll tell you all about it. here's a shot of joe's fleetline: first fade job, home made hubcaps.
Every Year More people will be added.. This is just the begining of the wall.. Like I said he's trying to get people that are still with us first. So ya there will be allot more people.
very cool...can't wait to see all of this in person....BTW you should get Andy Southard Jr., Rod Powell and Dan Woods on that list... just to name a few...
Just picked up my copy of Ol Skool Rodz with Santa Maria show featured. Lots of collage pictures of show. Little Article. There is a pic of them casting my dads hand for that trophy....teaser to Showcase of Kustoms Show in September.
I see your point to try to get guy's that are still alive but..... being that it is the first year of the wall ,I would think some of the early pioneer's of customs would get recognized, since they were the guy's who started all of this.
Jeff, who on the wall this year is not a early pioneer in your opinion? All the first generation kustomizers will be recognized in time as we move forward with this extensive project. I have to concentrate on the Legends that are still with us to ensure legitimate castings. All others that have p***ed before us, ie. Harry Westergard, Bill Cushenbery will have to be stand in hands ghosted so there are no characteristics of the donor hand. I look forward to seeing a list of people you think should be included in future years. Trace Edwards
I agree with Mitch, Joe Anderson should be included, he painted a ton of cars! Ed Schelhaas, Damon Richey, Jay Johnson and Bill DeCarr should be included, maybe not this year as time is ticking but in the future!
How about the Houser's of Carson Top fame are they all p***ed? Bill Gaylord? You need some upholsterers in the mix. Like Martinez. Jack McNeil is in Lake Havasu, AZ who worked for Bill Gaylord in the Lynwood shop. Went on to own his own shop in Paramount.
