Stopped this am to fuel up the coupe on the way to work:

As I was washing my windshied a farmer drove up in his pickup:

    "That looks pretty authentic."

"Thanks. I built it to be period-correct around 1950."

    "is that a '32?"

    "haha, no. it's a '30. if it was a '32 it'd be worth 10x as much".

    "are you local?"

"yeah, I live a couple miles south of town."

"well, it's nice to see old stuff driving around"

    "thanks"

    and he drove off.

soon after as I was waiting for the mile-long coal train to unobstruct my commute, I wondered, am I a local?

I was born and raised in Southern Connecticut (20 years), lived & went to college in Kansas (11 years), worked outside Boston (5 years), now in Kansas (6 years).

It sounds like you just met someone who knows what a rod out of the 50's should really look like from experience. I'd say you are local rather than just traveling through and that was what he was asking.
I like the way you have the car set up too, it has a real hotrod look to it rather than a look at me appearance.

i was waiting for the catch line, something like,
" I've got a few of those old cars back in the barn, follow me"
and then you could have quit your job.

Unfortunately no, I have a scheduling conflict.

The Saab is my "winter beater" I think. I drive the impala and coupe most of the time.

Grew up in Lyme, East Haddam area.

You say that like it's a bad thing!

I grew up in Haddam, right across the bridge! Had Lyme disease twice :-(

  25. Lo-Cal, that's pretty good.
At least he didn't say So-Cal.:D
Being from the Southeast, it was sometimes said that I was more common than I was local.
I don't think you're officially local until you show up to work in your barn shoes and a sprig of wheat between your teeth.
Didn't Paul Simon write a song "Call me Jeb"?

I think anyone that chooses to stay in KS for more than 3 nights consecutively should be considered loco...I mean LOCAL!

j/k, you know Denise and I love to give you KS folks a hard time!

One better than that is the guy that I keep seeing when I'm driving the Chev around town and every time we chat it is the first time he's 'seen that car around these parts!' Crazy! :D

I don't know, I lived in a little German town East of Hays for 5 years, got married in their "Cathedral on the Plains", had relatives that helped build that church that resided in the town cemetary, and since I wasn't born there, I wasn't a local.....

Some little KS towns are like that.

  30. I agree, that coupe has a real authentic and comfortable look to it, feels right visually.
