I found a Continental online, and am looking to purchase once I move back to the U.S. The pics look good, but I know nothing about Lincolns. Can anyone give me a few tips on problem areas I should look into, or sources for parts. I have already found out about the scarcity of 430 parts, but was hoping to find someone who still makes parts for these things. Otherwise I think I'll swap for a 460. Any help would be appreciated.
Out of curiosity, I suppose since I own a Continental, I decided to do a quick search to see just what parts could be had online for a 430. I found that Rock Auto had several things available - http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carcode,1342224,pgname,Engine I found it a little strange that there was no water pump listed so I did a little more searching and I found several options on google shopping. - http://www.google.com/products?clie...coln+430+water+pump&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wf I found a rebuild service that you send your water pump in and they will rebuild it and send it back to you. http://www.rockauto.com/dbphp/x,car...NENTAL_7.0L_430_cubic_inch_V8_Water_Pump.html My Continental is a 1969 and has the 460 in it.
Wife,s uncle has a 64 they have owned since new (for sale right now), I have been keeping up maint on it for a long time the main thing I found is do not leave the windows pressed up hard when it is in storage, for some reason the electric motor has to be helped to go down for the 1st time. The engine parts are ordered over the counter in most cases. I put in a front trans seal it was one day to get it over the counter. easy to work on and fun to drive. Good luck
Thanks, supposedly it runs and drives, in the pics it is plated, so that's a good sign. It's hard to tell, but I don't see much rust on it other than the bumpers, but I am not too worried about them. I have found several on E-bay, if the ones on the car can't be salvaged. I ran across this car about 2 years ago while I was in Iraq, I have been watching the site since then hoping it's still there by the time I get back. Thought about calling the dealership, but since I can't pick-up the car now, I didn't see the point. It was priced at $7500 when I first saw it, but now it's down to $5450. Considering what I have seen them priced for on E-bay it seems like a bargain. I will most likely keep the 430 for a while, I have a buddy back home with a '98 F-150 that we transplanted a 460 with a 3 speed into. I know he has another, it's just a matter of getting it from him. Another option I considered was a 5.0, but that seemed a little TOO common, I like a little uniqueness. A 430 with tri-power would be perfect for me.
You can get pretty much everything you need for these cars from Bakers Auto in Putnam CT. I get all sorts of stuff for my 66 from them. Also check out Egge Machine and Kanter. Always stuff to be found there for all the rare engines. Keep the 430.
Marrs... This looks like the one at Country Cl***ics in Staunton, Ill. I would just alert you to the fact that MOST of their cars (there are a few exceptions) are stored outside 24/7/365. A number of their cars have been on the lot for years, and years. Just make sure you see the car in person - when you get back to the States - BEFORE you buy it. All the best to you, and thanks for your service. Jonnie King www.legends.thewwbc.net
Make sure you check the undercarriage, these cars are unibody. Trunklids are hard to find as most have rusty lids. mechanical parts aren't too hard to find : Bakers, Lincoln Land, 65 is the first year for disc brakes. Just make sure the car is complete some parts are expensive. Check out the Lincoln Continental Owners Club (LCOC ) lots of info there in the forums.
There will be rust in the doglegs behind the rear door. The drain holes plug and cause all kinds of damage. The 460 will not be an easy swap as the exhaust manifolds will not clear the sheet metal "frame". However, I can provide you with pictures of the '68 engine compartment, the first year for the 460. You can cut and shape the "frame" to fit. Visit http://www.thelincolnforum.net
Please keep the 430, unclescooby on the HAMB is well versed with these torque monsters. This place will be your friend also: http://www.ford-mel-engine.com
I helped do some paint prep work on a '66 4-door convertible once.... I wonder how rare those are??? I also knew a little old lady that owned a rare '69 4-door T'bird... My old boss at a auto repair shop ended up buying the T'bird in the late '70's......
Thanks for everyone for all the information, I just got back Stateside and found out my new Unit is headed to Afganistan before the end of the year so I have decided to put my continental project back on the shelf. The continental I had been looking at for almost 3 years while in Germany actually was the one at Country Cl***ics. About 2 days before I got on the plane they took it off their site. I don't know if it sold or they just removed the listing, but I either way I'm gonna have to wait a little longer.
