can anyone point me in the right direction for the semi-flat/satin style paint used on the rat rod style projects? went to my local parts store and the guy that was helping me had not a clue, he told me to just spray flat black and that's it, no clear , sealer , nothin didn't sound right to me? brands and store names would be appreciated. thanx

Before you're lambasted for the r@* rod talk, I suggest you change your wording. However to answer your question, just get a satin black paint. If it's going to be a low buck rod spray bomob it with Rustoleum. Lays smooth just make sure you leave it in the sun to warm up.

I use Spiez Hecker rally matte black. Kinda pricey, but so is the DuPont hot rod black. Pretty much every paint line has a flat or semi flat black. Just depends on what you want to spend or what name brand you like. Just make sure it has UV protection so it doesn't chalk out. Using one that is a single stage application is easier, as apposed to black with a flat clear.

First, since I'm barely out of FNG status myself, they do traditional hot rods here not the dreaded RR. You weren't specific about whether you were spraying yourself or rattle canning it or what. Go to a dedicated automotive paint store and talk to someone. Valspar, Sherman Williams, House of Color, look in the Yellow Pages. what you want is a flattening agent depending upon type of paint. you can get a cool suede look a couple of ways. You don't want black primer, it'll just get chalky. When I worked at Lowe's paint guys were buying satin black of flat black rattle cans, but not to be confused with black primer, it's different

SEM black rust shield with hardener, its tough, its cheap, easy, and wont freak out if you decide to paint over it later.

why not spray it with Lacquer but don't rub it out. Lacquer has a satin look prior to rubbing out.
