I got my short block back a couple of weeks ago. This is a 1962 ford thunderbird. I was able to use the old heads which were milled to specs. Now the car spots about 6-to 8 drops of oil on the drivers side and jusy a little less on the passenger side. Now I wipe down the head and the back of the intake manifold. When I put the car away for the evening and wait several hours for it to cool down I then get my index finger where the eighth chamber is on the intake and put my finger in about two and a quarter inches and feel oil .The back of the intake is dry just on those two corners of the intake is the oil nothing up front what so ever. The mechanic used the same intake off the orginal engine as with the heads also. The new engine has the same casting as the old engine. Is there a test that would full proff my suspicions. Thanks Larry
The most likely spot would be the intake manifold end cap seal. During assembly the joint where the end cap gasket meets the intake runner gasket might not have gotten enough or any silicone to seal it up. It is more common now to not use the cork gaskets and just run a bead of silicone across the ends of the manifold and this helps get rid of this problem. Could also be a fitment problem if enough material was removed from the heads and the manifold dosen't seat where it used to. If you want to verify for certain find a local shop with a smoke machine to pump your block full of smoke and you will see where any leaks are at. Good luck.
