Id give it a try ,I tried a trans after 20 years and no luck ,I have 350 trans on the garage floor and Ill try em ,Even if they have been sitting for 15 years ,I cant honestly answer your question but 4 years is not a long time................The trans After 20 was my fault to much brake fluid......

Sitting outside? maybe not too long.....stored inside, well indefinately I would guess. I had one sitting in the corner for 8 years. Grimy old thing. A buddy needed it so I let him use it. That was over a year ago.

i had a crate motor that was 12yo when it was started, no problems if stored correctly,

oil is the issue, i would change it before starting, and then change it again after about a good hot run of about 1 hour.

If it's been inside and was good when it was put there, chances are it's fine. The only thing would be to make sure you change the seals so it doesn't run fluid out of it.Maybe dropping the pan for a new filter and fresh fluid would be a good idea too

Biggest problem I've had with auto ******s that have sat for a long time is that the clutch material that is trapped in the torque converter will settle to the bottom and if there is enough of it, it will throw the converter our of ballance. I have it happen twice so far. Now if I have a good ****** that I'm going to save for later I'll take the converter out and store it lying down and put a cover over the snout.
