I bought a 50 Merc woodie from Boxley Auto Wrecking in Sun Valley, CA in 1968 for $50.00. It ran. Some lady drove it in because it was overheating. It was British racing green. I sold it for $250 when I joined the Navy. Somebody slap me.....

Well I brought home a full truck load of parts earlier today and I am surprised at everything that is there. I am sure that I have every piece to this car. I will post pics soon as I can.

A guy in town has a red one of these. It's so nice. I'll try to get a picture when I see it again.

Well I went up to the barn and push the Woody out to get some pics of it. It currently has a 289 sitting in it but it is not mine. I will be pulling it out ASAP. I also wanted to try my fender skirts on this and well I am not feeling the way they look. So I will be selling them off and reworking the rear wheel well area. Hell if it is gonna be a custom might as well change something..........lol anyway here is how it looks right now.

I am sorry but instead of starting a new thread I changed the name of this one and well I will use this to document the build of this 51 Woody Wagon.

Thanks ProEnfo, I am just wondering though why does everyone seem to be using a different tailgate and lift gate on many of the Woody's I have been seeing done other than stock?

There are two different factory tailgates. 49 and early 50 were wood frame over metal, and late 50 and 51 were metal skinned. The uppers are all the same. Lots of guys take the spare tire carrier off the early gates and replace the panels for a no spare look. You can then put a roll pan on it and run different bumpers that don't have the dropped section where the spare folds into. FYI, you can remove the skin from a metal gate and have wood made for it like original. Another thing guys do is remove the division bar in the rear hatch and run one piece glass. Not saying that any of this info is useful for a custom, more street roddy. But... The hardware on the gates and hatchs is different year to year and not interchangeable. Heres a late 50 Ford gate.

Early 50 gate before the wood goes on, and I know, it's a streetrod. Hey, at least I sectioned the bumper guards!

I'll keep you in mind. I've used original wood twice, tan and green cars, and new wood once. Merc. quarters and rear wood is the same as the Ford, doors are obviously different. For a custom I'd guess you want new wood. Crazy money and 6 month to 2 year wait from the big name guys. I've made and have pictures of just about every body part, if you need anything PM me. Have fun!
