Anthony led me to it, Mike. He knew about the last 30 years of its life, but nothing prior. Someone on this board must know who Red Welch was. The chop is extreme, but it was done very well.

  5. Damn, that is one fine looking coupe.
I love heavy chops and that is done to perfection...

What's up, Charlie Manson! Yep, it's mine. The plan is to get it running and stopping, get a decent bench seat interior in it, a nice set of www's. then drive the **** out of it!

finially got registered. i am the finlayson i was reading about. yes, i am into chopping, channeling, sectioning, ch***is swaps, z and c framing, etc. my favorite chopped 50 ford 2 dr sedan was chopped 6 inches. angled b pillars. the back windown resembled the one of the merc. its b pillars are straight. i also kept the drip rail. my buddy here in town had a 51 merc, chopped the same amount and his back gl*** was reversed. my car is in scotts bluff, nebr. its not crawling arround on the ground. the new owner put it on a stock frame with lots of ground clearance, got rid of the old cad eldo motor with merc stick and overdrive on left side. now has a 351c with 4 speed on floor. he drives it everywhere. he also spent a lot of money putting the paint back just like it was because i gave him pictures of wolfman jack, gene winfield, jimmy vaughn(fabulous thunderbirds) and 11 mag articles of the car. it is black with flames all over the front and top corners of the a pillar. it still has the white tuck and roll with red belts between each plete. i owned it for 25 years. the merc went to california and never saw it again. iam into open road racing cars now. also have a 2 seat sprint car used for ride alongs at ppir when it first opened, and other cars. lyn finlayson, alliance, nebr. home of carhenge.com...

Thanks, Marty! I am looking forward to getting it on the road! It's sitting in a friends warehouse right now, not to far from you in Pompano Beach.

Movinman. I grew up in North Platte and know the Hiatts pretty well. I kinda figured it was their car when I saw the color (they painted everything that tan color for ages) I'll talk to my dad later and see if he remembers them with it.
It was sold before I was born I'm thinking, but dad might remember it.
Carol and Carol built some nice cars, have always done quality work, not junky stuff.

That chop on that thing is pretty radical, I dig how the rest was left pretty much alone.

Thanks gearhead. I appreciate it. I actually spoke with Carrol Hiatt at length about the car. He was quite surprised by the initial phone call.

I'm thinking it probably has something to do with the fact that I was born up there and spent the first 37 years of my life there? I could be wrong though, but I don't think so.

there was a Wally Welch that worked for Ayala Customs and they did merc chops and Wally drove a chopped merc he built while working for them. wonder if Red and Wally are the same or related?
