I have a 56 Oldsmobile. The previous owner put a altinator in. When I tighten the belt and drive down the road it pops off. I had to pull over lastnight because the hot light came on. Does this model car require a V belt. I'm currently using a stright belt.

Hmmm...You might want to explain better or just take a photo, even a ****py one, and post it. You want a V-Belt, unless your running a late model serpentine belt. That or I'm missing something.

pullies are mis-aligned. get yourself a straightedge and shims so you can get everything lined up properly and you'll be fine.

I was using a serpantine belt. Just found out one of the pulleys is off alignment. I'm going to replace it and while I'm in there I might as well put a new timing chain. Does anyone know where I can get a bottom pulley for a 324 Oldsmobile rocket motor?
