I have a '78 302 in the hot rod I just bought. It has a huge HEI. Will a distributor from a '60's 289 fit?

Unless it's some sort of aftermarket unit like a
'Davis DUI' distributor, or similar, your present
distributor is not an 'HEI'. The HEI was a large
    cap, electronically-triggered, 'high energy' OEM
GM piece. Ford came out with a large cap,
    electronically-triggered distributor of their own,
but it's not an HEI. If you ask for parts for an
'HEI' distributor at a parts store, they'll give
you parts for a GM distributor. But yeah, if your
    engine's a '78 302 Ford, any distributor designed
    for any year Windsor-style 221, 260, 289 or 302
    Ford V8 will fit.

Make sure you dont get one from a 351w as the oil pump drive shaft is a different size. 302's and down use 1/4" where as the 351w uses a 5/16"...yeah dont ask how I know...

And, don't forget that the later ones (post-85?) have a steel gear to be compatible with the hydraulic roller cams. Could cause wear issues on a flat-tappet cam.

If it's an original duraspark distributor, You should be able to just switch to a 289 distributor cap. It would look the same, except with one more wire coming out of it.

that is a aftermarket hei not ford oem. they do make a aftermarket hei with a small cap available. check the auction sites their fairly inexpensive, unless you want the original look.
    hope that helps

And you don't like it because? I have one on my 302 and real happy with it eliminated extra wiring clutter and curve was right on for my cam change.

'29 roadster with no hood. It just does not look good to me. That is the only reason.

I am running a Summit with their box. It is small and I got the black cap. It is a stand alone unit if you don't want to run the box. It is working great. Way better than the Duraspark I was running that had a big cap. I don't like the HEI either because of their size.

It's along the lines of...Posi is a GM name & isn't technically apropriate for describing a Ford or Mopar locking diff.

My reading must still be off! A 60s dizzy is a direct bolt in on a '78 302.
