Hi Everyone! Yesterday I picked up a 283 (a gift from a friend) which is the beginning of my next project (after my AV8 is done), a T bucket for my wife. It's a Canadian built '67 2 bbl. that was put together at the McKinnon Industries engine assembly plant in St. Catherines, Ontario on July 10th and probably went into a Beaumont (that's what a Chevelle was here in Canada). Researching the numbers kept me up till 3:00 a.m. last nite! Kind of refreshing after having filled my head with Ford flathead knowlege for the past twelve years! Anyhow, along with the mill, my buddy graciously threw in a stock 4 bbl. manifold which, apparently, is quite rare (pic enclosed). The numbers are "3844459" with "GM 3" underneath it and "H184" (date code??) behind on the top of the back section. The firing order "18436572" is ahead of the carb mounting flange. I could find no reference to these numbers in any of the number code sites I visited. I would mainly like to know "which carb fits it?" Also, the heads (3884520's) have the large pyramid above the rectangle on both ends. I couldn't find a solid reference that these are indeed "power packs". Are they? (pic enclosed). Many thanks in advance for any guidance to a GM virgin! Regards, Dave
i believe by the date code on the intake h184 that it was mfg on aug 18th 1964,i dont think it's a 55 intake for lack of temp gauge bulb hole in the left rear of it. and from what i remember the heads look like "power pack" heads. what is the date code on them? hope this helps
The 520's have 1.72/1.5 valves, 58-60.5 cc combustion chambers and 132cc intake runners. Not very good for performance. The 80-85 chevy 305 heads (416's) have 58cc chambers, 1.84 intake/ 1.5 exhaust valves and ~155cc intake runners AND hardened seats for unleaded fuel. The 601 have the same specs as the 416's excpt they use 55cc chambers.
sometimes anything made in canada, the numbers don,t match up to the books that are printed for the u.s.
most likely the 4gc by rochester. I had one on a 283 with the same heads and a 12/18 Duntov solid lifter cam. The carb is like two 2barrel rochesters in one and was used on cadilacs/ buicks etc. Jets etc are the same and this carb is easy to work with. has mechanical secondaries also. I had a lot of fun with it . The older "how to fix your rochester books" covered them
I have one of these intake manifolds on a '65 327 engine I picked up some years ago.The info I found said it was a service replacement manifold for a carter carb. The back driver side carb bolt was hollow and used as a vacumn port as the bolt hole is in the runner. I also have a '66 #'s matching 283 with those heads on it. The info I was able to find is that they were used on '60-'67 trucks, novas and chevells with 283's or 327's. They had 60cc chambers, 1.70 intake and 1.50 exhaust valves. Hope this helps.
hot rust: the passenger side head has "F8 7" (June 8/67?) and the driver's side is "F237" (June 23/67?). Many thanks for your help! gwarren007: I take it that all the heads you mentioned would fit my block OK. Thanks for putting all their info in one paragraph! JohnEvans: Many thanks for the carb info John! Now I can keep an eye peeled for one of them! hotrod40coupe: Thanks for your nod to the affirmative! 30sx: Yes, I've noticed that with the Ford stuff too! 36-3window: Thanks for YOUR nod to the affirmative! the "dude": Thanks for your personal experience with the Rochester! Have to see if I can locate one of those books if I find the carb! And thanks again to all of you for your input! GM guys rock! Regards, Dave.
