Is there a product on the market to add to your radiator to chemically lower your water temp by 10 to 20 degrees? I seem to remember something once said about a product called Water Wetter. Does this ring a bell with anyone? And if so, does it work?
Yes it is Water Wetter. Apparently it does work BUT it works best when used with straight water, so you have no rust protection without the antifreeze content. Father inlaw is in a Model A club (original cars) and people in his club claim it works.
I am not a physicist.......but I think the way Water Wetter works is to improve it's "contact" with cooling system components to both absorb heat from the engine and dissipate that heat through the radiator to the atmosphere. It doesn't actually "chemcally cool" the system............it enhances heat transfer. If you have a cooling system that is inadequate for your vehicle the best method is to correct the deficiencies, whatever they may be. Ray
IIRC, it's basically isopropyl(sp?) alcohol, which does dissipate heat faster than water. And it is supposed to be used only with water. Not sure what it would do with antifreeze(as in destroying or neutralizing antifreeze's corrosion inhibitors and lubricating qualities), let alone whether or not it could become corrosive in a cooling system. It's to be used in something that usually has it's system emptied on a fairly regular basis, like a race car, so corrosion wouldn't be an issue when a system is periodically drained.
Yes is it called Wetter Water, Yes it can be used with water only with corrosive protection included or be used with antifreeze. I have never used but I have a buddy that did and said it worked good.
Where do you get it? I just want to lower my temp a few degrees. I refuse to run a shroud on a traditional styled hotrod. It does get awfully hot here in Az. I tend to run around 200 degrees when I drive it. Seems like it pukes out the overflow a little everytime I run it. never had that problem in Wa. where it was a lot cooler. Thanks for the info
Yeah, It works great. I lived in the Mojave for a year, and it kept the Merc cool. Gotta run it with H2O only. Used to get mine from an ebay supplier.
I use it. The bottle says its ideal with water only. you can still use it with a/f but the results wont be maximum.
we baught some from summit while we were over there for HAN... it seemed to cool the temp down a little but we had a/f in the radiator too.
Bought some last week while I was in OR for the Back to the 50's cruise with dad's 51 Chevy stovebolt truck. It dropped the temp a few degrees, but we didn't have time to dump all the antifreeze. I read the bottle and it's supposed to work best with just water (20 degree drop), but you can get an appreciable amount of temp drop using a 20% antifreeze/80% H2O mix.
I've ran the stuff in my drag cars (383 strokers, and BBC 468's) with a water wetter/demineralized water mix (like you buy in gallons for ironing), ran it street as an additive to a 50/50 typical mix, and even ran it with a mix of 1 gal A/F and the rest tap water (street/strip). And these all had non-aluminum radiators, and I used a whole bottle. My Desoto with its mildly built SB mopar (around 375 horse), and aluminum radiator, actually stays more towards the 25 degree cooler end-even idling, in gear, in 102 degree Cen-Cal heat. It definately gives you that 20-25 degree safety margin..., BUT if your vehicle's going to experience any winter temps (and your running it with less than a 50/50 system mix) tape yourself a note somewhere obvious to either drain the block, or re-service it with a 50/50 for its winter nap. I usually got mine from either one of the local circle track speed shops or at a "real" auto parts store (the non-chain, mom & pop ones).
I used to get it at Shucks and ran it in my old BBFord coupe and only with water and it worked great about 20 cooler.
Radiator Coolant Additive, 40 Below, Pro Blend <!--Quick Overview --> Stops Overheating Reduces Water Temperature Pro-Blend guarantees instant results from this radiator additive. Add 30 Oz. per 2 gallons or- 60 Oz. per 4 gallons of water (or coolant). Product does not need to be applied every time the system is flushed, but 60 ounces are needed to reduce temperatures 40°. Perfect for racing, towing and daily drivers with air conditioning.
A friend of mine used that 40 Below in his Model A with a 350 in it and solved his overheating problems.
a shroud isnt traditional? an over heated rod broke down or screwed up isnt very traditional either read my sig line
Lots of brands on the market, Red Line's Water Wetter, 40 Below, Siloo Tempeture Control, Royal Purple and others.
We use a little bit of Snuggle fabric softener in mine. Helps with the tensoin of the water molecules and runs cooler. It does the same thing as a $10.00 bottle of additive. And smells fresh if you ever have a leak also... CJO13
