Some of you were askin if you should renew your CK subscriptions. I found out today that CK is no longer in business. The old CK is under new management, well some of the partners split, and is undergoing changes. A new mag will be coming out shortly. New name, same game, just dunno when yet.

From what I was told, Zombie and his father are going in on another traditional rod mag. Soooooooo that means we will have another CK coming up soon, but just with a different name. Oh and I was promised better articles, techs and pics. So who knows, time will tell!

I knew something was up because I subscribed back in October and have never received 1 issue and I can never get anyone on the phone there. Their answering machine is still hooked up though.

I hope they lean more towards what Hot Rod Deluxe was instead of what ended up as CKDeluxe.

I think about moving back to Bakersfield all the time, I was going to check out doing some photo work with them, maybe part time or something. Who knows maybe something good will come out of it.

That's because the old partners, also do the screen printing for Zombie's Hotrod Wear....it's all done in the same shop.

I was wondering what was up since my supplier never called me at all as to my magazine being in at all. Do you know what was the last issue released? Actually moreso, what was on the cover of the last one as i dont remember what number any of them ever were...

Yeah, that ****s. I hate to see a good magazine down. Only the magazines that are motivated by there advertisers make it!

I sure hope that since I renewed right after issue 12, they will honor my subscription with the new mag. If not, I guess this is like Tex Smith's Custom Car mag, that I only got 3 of.

When I got my renewal notice, I called and told them I wasn't gonna renew until I got the last issue. She called me and shortly after that I got the magazine. Somebody on here said that maybe we should hold our renewal. Glad that was posted. Sure glad that I didn' t renew.

I remember Aaron getting those Tat's also. Someone on here could prolly come up with another meaning for him. LOL

I couldn't say, I've never subscribed...I hope they get something going real soon though! I don't think it sunk because of a a lack of funds, as opposed to too many Indian's and not enough Chief's.

I agree. I did subscribe to CKD and it wasn't bad but I did prefer the former.
I too did not renew my sub., mainly because I didn't have the cash during the holidays. Thanks Brandy, you saved me 20 bucks.

Shame. I liked CKD, though it could be a little hit and miss at times I guess it was more hit than many other mags.

Hey, at least we've still got OSR

I really liked the magazine and I'm sad to hear they are no more.

The last issue i got had an awsome 30 tudor sedan that was severely chopped and channeled. I think it was from New Zealand. It was a beautiful car.... Their spelling wasn't so great...but I wanted more of the same. :(

wow, thats too bad. i had feared something was up after issue 11. It had more than the usual amount of typos and what not. But the 12 came out(late!) and it seemed they had turned it around.

Looking forward to whatever they put out next!

  25. That's a bummer. I couldn't find it around here, and my subscription was hit and miss, but I don't like to see anyone go down. It's tough being an independent business and keeping things going.

    Good luck to all involved.

  26. You did better than I with "TEX SMITH", Sent him my money, read he had filed bankruptcy on a certain date, dug out my check and it had cleared the bank about 3 weeks after the date of bankruptcy. Go figure. Never got a thing, wouldnt even answer the phone. Rumor was he made out like a bandit with no obligations to folks like us. He is not the first who has ripped us off and wont be the last. Mr. Honesty and Intagrity, TEX SMITH!!!

Given all the complaints and horror stories about subscribers never getting their magazines I never subscribed to CKD. In fact CKD discouraged me from subscribing to Garage, OSR, etc. because I didn't want to get burned by some guys who may or may not put out a magazine this month because they treat it as a hobby instead of a business. Not that I'm putting down the other publishers; it's just that I'm not a very trusting person anymore and I don't know these people. For that reason CKD did damage to the indie hot-rod magazine market; at least as far as I'm concerned. If you're not going to do it right don't do it at all.

Besides that I didn't think the content was worth $6 an issue. Microsoft Word Spell Check is NOT a proofreader. They should have hired someone familiar with the English language to look it over; hell I would have done it for free. Beyond that the features were so-so and the mag was a quick read and toss. That's why I never got around to ordering issues straight from the website more than once or twice.

If you're going to publish a magazine DO IT RIGHT! Your subscribers don't want to hear, "Well I've been busy around the shop and my old lady has been giving me hell and the photographer flaked and the dog ate my homework and the fly-by-night cheap printer lost the proofs blah, blah, blah." If you want me to send you $20 you gotta do better than that; otherwise don't bother with subscriptions and just sell them at shows and your website.

  29. a damn shame to hear this....they helped to put me on the art map by featuring my work....let my sub go around #9 but still kept up by buying issues at shows....keep an eye out on Egay now cause the prices for back issues are gonna soar

    Tim

  30. The layout was ****. The proofing was even worse. The delivery time was simply unacceptable.

All that said, the cars they featured were about 1,000 times cooler than those found in Pre-school Rods.
