Early Hemi guys - need some starter pictures & measurements

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by DanBabb, Jul 31, 2010.

  1. I just read the early hemi trans tech thread and can't find what I need.

I need to see if I can fit the starter on the driver side or if I need to do a chevy automatic on my 52 Dodge project.

Looking for some pictures of guys running starters on the driver side.

I don't have any specific transmission in mind...I'll have to buy whatever I use. So some guidance on a good auto trans would be good to hear too. I read a lot about guys using the 727.

The steering box is on the driver side and I think I'll only have about 4 inches from the block bellhousing mounting surface to the steering box. I don't know how much room I need or where the starter sits in relation to the oil pan mounting surface.

Not a great picture, but you can see that I don't have a lot of room.

  2. easiest to flip it to the right/passwngers side...espically if ya run a none stock trans, most adapters for none stock trans are optional right side starter cut...,mine is..and it tucks nicely under the forward pointing style oil filter housing i have....easy to service, totally uncrowded over there....
besides, there's no room what so ever on the drivers side for a starter..pedals and column hog all the space in my topo..

  3. Talk to Pat at Wilcap - he made my bell housing adapter (running a Sonic SBC bell housing), made the flywheel, etc.. He modified his NC programs to match the Sonic bell-housing - it has a starter pocket on the passenger side. The Sonic bell housing is from the roundy-round guys - nice pressure formed 1/4 steel and doesn't hang down like the frigging monstrosity from Lakewood (which I can't stand in an early hotrod).

Anyway, if you do some searches - I've detailed every part in my combination (which is a 5-speed tremec). I wanted a manual trans, but needed the starter on the passenger side . . . just too much shit on the drivers side! I'm using a small gear-drive starter - just to give me as much room as I can.

    Best of luck!

You can find a AMC Torqueflite Transmission, the starter is on the passengers side, if you are planning on running a automatic transmission

Ditto! Talk to Pat. He should be able to put the starter wherever you want it!

Then he'd need an adaptor with the AMC bell pattern....
