I'll be pulling out the locked up motor in my 54 Belair soon and will be replacing it with a '56 235. I don't know the condition of the stock 3 speed that is in the car since it hasn't run in 20+ years and will be pulling it along with the motor. Any advice on pulling the motor and trans and separating it from the torque tube? Also, is there any company that specializes in parts or rebuilding the 3 speed manual trans of this era?

Are you aware of the fact that a '56 235 doesn't have motor mount bosses in the same place your '54 block does? A '58-'62 block has a different mount bolt pattern, but at least has bosses in the same area, so all that is needed is a thin adapter plate. '55-'57 blocks have the mount bosses up near the very front of the block.

there is a big nut on the end of the trans where the torgue tube goes in, loosen probably by hand, undo all the linkages and it will slip out when you pull the motor forward. Also Chevs of the 40s sells rebuilt ******s for 500 if I remember right, but have you considered just rebuilding the 235!!! Its a great motor and a fairly easy swap in and out???

If not get a new one, hate to sound rude but I found a machine shop in N.Illinois that sold me a top of the line completely rebuilt full pressure 235 for 500 bucks. Look here on the HAMB and check craigslist, you can usually find 235 running for a couple of hundred, or you might get lucky and you dont have to fab up mounts, linkage, new trans, etc...I could be wrong but the 265 you want to run might not hook uo to the closed rear-end that is in your car, and if not it's a whole new nightmare!!
