I'm guessing you did not install return ducts in order to keep fumes and odors from blowing into the house; do you have any migration of fumes back through the supply vents when fan is off?

My builder tried to do me a favor and add 2 vents to my ba*****t garage, but the inspector said they penetrated the firewall ceiling. It gets a fair amount of cool just radiating down through the floor but I still have one vent in the garage bathroom and I can prop the door open.

To chaddilac, You didn't say whether the shop was insulated how much gl*** area you have, how high the ceiling/roof is and how well sealed the building is. Two 3-ton (72,000 btus total) units may or may not do the job in the peak of the summer. If the capacity is too small, you may not be able to maintain an ideal 75 deg, but you may be able to get 80 degrees. You might also get decent humidity control as the units would run enough to wring the moisture out of the air. For non-peak times, a two stage thermostat could help if you set the first stage a couple of degrees below the second stage. That way if the load is light, the second unit would not come on uless the load increased and the first unit was no longer able to maintain the temperature. Unfortunately, I do not have a/c in my shop as I don't get to spend enough time there to justify it. Also even thuough my wills, doors and ceiling are insulated and the shop is only 1525 sq. ft., the 15 ft. ceiling height makes for a lot of volume, so it would take a large unit to heat and cool.

I have a heat pump installed in my free standing insulated 26x30 extra tall garage here in Williamsburg, VA. The summers are just too hot and I'm getting too long in the tooth anyway. My buddy who is in the AC business found a nice 2 1/2T takeout unit and installed it for me - I actually hung it up on the wall to get it out of the way.

Since I've already run a natural gas line to the garage from the house, he's going to swap out the electrical heap pump portion and install a natural gas unit to save $$. Electric hot air heat takes too long in the garage and my bills were up there - natural gas heats up the place much quicker, including everything in it, and seems to stay warmer longer.

Damn, Thats harsh. But its freakin funny!!!!

  6. I've got 2 industrial 220v wall units in my shop. But it's so poorly insulated that the electric bill costs too much to run the AC, so I've been sweating for the past 3 summers.

I do not have AC in the shop or HOUSE! It wouldn't be traditional! LOL
OK, not really, I am just a cheap***! After this summer I will be adding drywall to the ceiling, insulation, a ceiling fan, and putting in a false wall to seperate the shop to storage/work areas. I just have to figure out how to hide it from the wife since i will not be putting A/C in the house! Hell, I don't need it in the house if I am always in the garage!

My garage is insulated and dywalled, but its almost too small!! Even with a 50Chev if the door is closed I can barely walk round the car, so air, while it would be like heaven wouldnt work. Next house will have his/hers garage!! 1 garage to park her car and hold **** like the lawnmower and a 2nd garage in the back thats heated/cooled, fridge, tv, etc....but we gotta sell this house first!!!

I was driving home one day a couple of summers ago, and at a house a couple blocks from home there was a window A/C unit with a sign that said "FREE". I slammed on the brakes, loaded up the A/C, and hurried home. It's a 12,000 BTU unit and works great. It sure has come in handy this summer with the heat and humidity we've had.

The condenser, squirll cage, and A-coil is all in one outside unit and I put a heat coil ***ist in it for heat in the cooler months. Real slick install!!!! Its blowin like its snowin!!!!!

A dropped ceiling would be your best friend with A/C and heat. See you next weekend!

yep. put in a used mini split heat pump last fall. Heated with it over the winter and cooling with it this summer. I have a small garage so I only have to turn it on when I am going out, takes only a few minutes to get it comfortable. I have an extra one, so when I move I will put it in the new garage.

I had a/c and heat at our old house and really miss it now. Our new place doesnt and I havent been out in the garage for about two months.

  18. I have a/c in the garage, I don't use it that often. But sometimes the humidity here in the midwest is so bad you can't function without it.

Also I live near the water and in the summer the bugs are so bad it is the only way to work in the garage with the doors closed.

So yeah put me down as a non traditional old guy with modern convienance in my garage.

BTW I have heat, Cable TV, internet and them new fangled floresent lights too.:D

I have A/C- 71 degrees and dry air. 60 percent humidity. I will not sweat on a car any more. Nothing worse than rusting the new metal you just got done fixing. 94 out side 71 inside.

I worked in shops without a/c for way too long ,so we put a 4-ton mobile home unit in my 24x50 shop. My wife works in the shop almost as much as i do and i don't get much help from her without the a/c or heat.

At my age I couldnt work in the heat any more. When I built my car barn I installed a 5 ton system and 175,000btu's of heat so I can keep it comftorable all year long. My day's of busting *** in the cold or heat are over and I wouldn't have it any other way

Oh yea..I'm done dripping sweat all over everything, especially down here with 100 degree heat and 100 percent humidity. I don't miss being a blood donor to mosquitoes either. My shop has cinder blocks poured solid with concrete and insulated doors and windows, so it doesn't take much to keep the 1200 sq ft comfortable.

Yup it's nice. Sadly no ac in my shop now. Got most of it insulated and sheeted inside and overhead door insulated. It makes a huge difference. Best part is the huge squirrel cage fan that really moves the air arround. Not the coolest but the fan keeps it from being too stale and sticky.

I have a window unit, its positioned over the work bench. I run it even with the garage door open. Wouldn't be without it.

I got a fan in my garage,a traditional flat black fan with a red painted blade.I am hammering a way in my small garage with a 25x30 car port, the blistering south Texas tempatures are enough to keep you in the house...

I work outside and have a small squirrel cage fan and a patio umbrella. I'm thinkig of bringing out my swamp cooler for a little cool air.

My electricity is a little sketchy right now though.

Air conditioning, If its really hot outside I'll drop an ice cube in my drawers, if it's really really hot outside I'll put in two, one for each nut. The contest is "what shrinks faster, the ice cubes or the nuts?
