question about 55 chevy rear axle swap into 52 chevy coupe

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 52chevlaynframe, Aug 13, 2010.

  1. I cam across a 55 chevy rear axle
I heard its almost a bolt in swap for 49-54 chevy cars
Any info from people that have done the swap would be great
    THANKS

  2. Search is your friend, or hit the 49-54 section on www.chevytalk.org - it's a pretty simple swap.

You must redrill the spring locating hole. We used to drill one inch back. Locate the new rear under the car and see how it looks. You can use a plate with a stud and some holes to fine tune if you like. Just an opinion.

We have a 56 rear in our 51 Business Coupe. The spring pin locator hole is drilled back inch, and 1/2 inch inward; but, I would suggest just drilling it 1" rearward and checking. The shock plate, and U-bolts seem to "lean" in slightly on ours. The other easy swap, is the 68-74 Nova/68-early 80's Camaro rear ends that will bolt in with only a pin hole redrill also.
