model a roof insert

i was looking at my old issues of rod and custom and i ran across the DK mystery coupe. it's on the cover of the august 09 issue. i wan't to put a removable roof insert like that one on my coupe. anybody know how they made that one. or has anyone done something similar. i was also thinking about a vw van sliding roof. just looking for some ideas and the best way to do this. thanks

 

From the article it says "a canvas-covered sheet metal top insert that can be removed and stored in a pouch behind the seats"....

I am also very interested in how this was done....has anyone seen this car in person or knows how the filler was made ???
