If you do any welding on your bumpers, don't grind it before you take'em to your chrome shop! Not exactly sure why but the chrome guys I know do all the finish work so the know exactly what goes in their tanks...

That smoothed out bumper on the wagon looks killer!

If you decide to go with 49-52 bumpers, Bob's Cl***ic Chevy offers brand new, one-piece chrome front and rear bumpers for 49-52 Chevys. They go for $450 each.

Damn. Wish I could find a usable bumper for under a grand.

Anybody know of a clean '55 caddy rear bumper for a fair price? All the ones I've found are outrageous...

so what is a set of these bumpers worth that need to be rechromed, but are pretty straight? I'm not using mine and have never looked to see if their 1pc, but will check tonight.

  5. One piece bumper.... Right after I weld it.... :D:D
Then grind to contour and go to the chromer....
seems simple to me - especially as we are all creating here rather than restoring, right?

I dunno if it's a Canadian model. I just pulled it from the internet since the bumpers are the same as my set. I did check mine, and the front is the same as the one on my '53 Chevy except for a couple of extra holes. The ends of the rear bumper are a lot different to accommodate the Pontiac quarters. From what I remember, both front and rear brackets looked like they would work without modification.

Were there two different bumpers on '53 Pontiacs?? The ones I had and remember seeing look like this. As you can see, they don't look anything like '53 Chevy.

I found out that National Chevy sells front and rear bumper pieces,...NOT 1 piece bumpers, for those of us that are looking to take our 3 piece bumpers to weld them up and smooth them out, and then chromed.
I needed both drivers side and p***enger side front bumper pieces, and a whole new rear bumper for my 53.

Check out their website, and go to "used parts", you can look at the pictures to see what your buying.
    Or, here is a link:

    Call and ask for Adam.

Picked up emblems and the rear bumper cross bar today from the chromers. Hopefully I will have some nice clean bumpers and chroming on my car in a couple months.

It isn't really that simple. If you modify a bumper with welding, the welds will almost always have pitting in them. It takes the plater a lot more work to make it look right, than a bumper without modifications. The better the fab work/welds, the better the finish. Simple concept that requires great skill on both ends of the job.

The reason platers want the welds left unground is so the customer doesn't grind them down too far and create a low spot that is rediculously difficult to correct. That is my reason anyways.

  12. Yes, Bumper Boyz have them but watch the quality. I got some 3 piece bumpers from them for my 54 Chevy, and one end piece started pitting within one year. They do have a one year warranty, so I took it back and got another one.

  13. The thing I did with the three piece bumpers was I made some stainless covers to go over the seam. It looks better than you would think
