I'm finally starting on the stude. The engine is going to be a 383 stroker wich is being built by bootlegger jim here on the hamb. The trans is gong to be a turbo 400 with a 9 inch ford rear. The front suspension is 75 nova. My goal is to go 150 mph at maxton and drive it there and back.maybe its no big deal but thats what i want to do.
Is the first pic the current condtion now? Which means we will see it running in Sept. at maxton, right? You putting in a roll cage?
From the custom Stude thread - this guy is knocking on 180mph with 413hp. All for 5700bucks! http://www.wgal.com/video/20355924/index.html
no jeff. I'm using a 75 nova front clip, narrowed 2 inches just like you told me to do.......remember?
first pic is the way it looked when i got it ayear ago. The body is off the ch***is right now. Yes it will have a cage, and no it wont be ready for sept.
Good luck, sounds like fun. I've got a new appreciation for Studeys, as my neighbor just bought a Lowboy.
It's a goal .... Aim for it and score ! Half the people in the world don't even know what to do after lunch ....
Well, you picked the right body for speed. The Loewy coupe has the lowest coefficient of drag of any American car built up to he '60's. I think it was the '62 Dart that finally beat it for slippery, but the Stud has it for looks by a Bonneville mile. 150 will be a walk in the park as long as the gearing is right. You might need a spoiler to keep it going pointy end first, my '79 mustang wanted to go sideways after 120 or so without one. The back end tends to lift at high speed due to the airfoil shape of the body, and the fact that the front end is heavier. The slipperier it looks, the more lift it makes. Slamming the front end as low as you dare will do much the same thing by not letting air under the car, but a bump can lift the front end and there you go!
i'm trying like hell to build this one as budget minded as i can to go 150. Ive been buying just about everthing from craigslist. Thinking about calling it '' the craigslist special'' my engine builder said 150 from the 383 he's building should be easy. I dunno, we'll just have to wait and see.
maybe the stude's got the balls to go 150. But i dont know about me. I aint never been that fast. I'll have to work up to it.
Oh yea. I know its another small block chevy[yawn] ,and the car wont be completely traditional. I'm just doin the best i can do with what i got!
a thousand pardons!!!! OK CAN YOU BE HERE IN AN HOUR TO HELP ME REBUILD THE FRONT SUSPENSION? JUST KIDDIN!
I took the Firebird up to 143 (don't ask where, speed measured by GPS.) They get mighty light up there, wiggly in the front, very boucny. It's cool you're doing it on a safe track and I think it'll be a great time. Good luck and let us know when you make it!
Funny, I'm building just what you are sort of. Avanti, (Stude Lark frame) 9 inch, four link, turbo 400 and 427 small block. Lets race when we're done!
not much to look at, but i am making progress. every thing in the nova front clip is new [ damn i caught hell gettin them old control arm bushings out ]. ch***is is cleaned and painted. i just got my block back from the machine shop fri. bootlegger jim will be building it. i hope i can get this thing built before i run out of money.
EW, I believe you have a respectable an obtainable goal there. I have a feeling your gonna make us proud!!
OD's can tend to have too big a split between high and OD for LSR. Too much of a drop out of the power band and not enough time/distance to recover especially on a mile course like Maxton. Sometimes never recover even at B'ville. Same problems can occur with a cam that has too narrow a power band for the rest of the combination. Everybody's mileage varies.............. Ed
