Very impressive numbers for any small motor but a Flathead it's super human. They must be tuned on the bare edge of lean to burn a piston and I hope they can get it fixed and back in competition.

Outstanding performance from what I consider real back yard Hot Rodding. After watching their 270 MPH plus run last year at Bonneville with just fuel injection I was blown away. THESE GUYS ARE MY HEROS.
A burned piston and head can be fixed during the four hour impound time limits if they have the parts. Its still early in the week but no matter what they now have the fastest Ford flathead V-8 speed ever recorded. Congratulations

Here are two pictures rippred off the Landracing.com site of the 500cc lakester (182 or so) and the 750 'liner (212 or so). These are much newer than the 788 car. Gives you a good sence of proportion in Jacks world. Small and low is way to big and tall for Jack.

I talked to dad (Jimmy Stevens) last night and they used the whole time allotted to fix the burned piston. I hope they can fix it today.

Looks like they got it fixed and made a pass at 284.701 mph.

Here is a picture of another of Jack's creations. It gives perspective to the width of a motorcycle powered 'liner. Tragically this one, the Salt Snake, crashed. But it is very much like the 8080 car. The front wheel dosesn't steer by rotating around a king pin but is part of a panograph type of deal and remains pointed straight ahead but moves sideways out of track with the rear wheel. The 8080 car has 4 wheels but they are very narrow and bolted hard togeather.

It's true that Ron Main spen very large amounts on the Flatfire. And Jack spent very little on the 788 car. However there are more people involved here than Jack. Jack's cars were successful but not anything like they are now. Then Rick Yacoucci started supplying horsepower and maintenance. And picked up about 140 mph. The Jimmy Stevens flathead that is now in the car is a wounder amoung the Super Flatheads. The car has picked up 50 mph with this power over the best of various flatmotors that were in it before. So I would say it's a genius group effort

Jimmy Stevens reported severe water leakage prevented the 788 team from backing up the 306 mph record. They worked all Sunday and came up with a fix. We should see another attempt today (Monday).

Here is a couple peaks at the motor (taken at El Mirage).

Jimmy Stevens is a lifelong racer (also a retired fireman). All of the gains he has made through the years on the flathead have been through his development efforts in the 800 sq. ft. shop behind his house in Leona Valley, CA.

He's a former NHRA World Champion, Holds several Flathead Records now, including several driving the Pappas & Stevens Roadster. For years he paid the Bonneville Bills by building Championship Junior Drag Racing Motors, including winning a Heads-up Championship for his grandaughter.

Since teaming up with Costella & Yacoucci they have racked up several records with the flathead and Jims' Four Cylinder F-motor.

Here's a picture of Jims' Championship Boss 302 Roadster from the 70s. This car was converted to run the Salt in the 90's, ultimately with the more aerodynamic 'glass body shown.

The flathead currently being run in the streamliner evolved from the motor you see to the left in my avatar.

    Monday Update (From WhiteGooseBar.com):
The #788 Nebulous Theorem III team did a run at 290.152 mph, but it was not enough to qualify for a record return. They continued to work on the engine the rest of the day.

Speaking of the #8080 "Nebulous Theorem VIII" J-class Fuel Streamliner (J/FS) ... I guess this is as good a place as any to congratulate HAMBr sr on getting into the prestigious "Two-Club":

  23. Lets just hope it is a head-gasket / sealing issue . . . and not a split block!

I din't think there is any water in that block. I think they burned a hole in the head when the piston got eaten

There was water leaking from a couple Exhaust ports in the block (the one with the burned piston and the one next to it). The Piston was replaced in impound, the leaks were discovered in the return-run warm-up. So Sunday they cut off the water supply to the block then ran 290 before it went away (Monday). They worked all day Monday I mean they have been working their butts off, but I'm thinkin they will have to wait till October to get the record.

The 309mph pass was made using methanol (NO NITRO), water injection, Turbo with boost in the 20s range.

The car in the second picture (the red one) is NT2. Jack ran it with a V4 Honda MC engine. Then Jim True ran it with a Yahama 1000cc inline four. Then Rick with his very fast Turbo Hyabusa motors. Then Rick stepped in to the 788 car NT3. This leaves NT2 open and without a power plant or partner for Jack. Anybody?
