how many of you guys are runnin a y-block as your daily driver? my straight 6 is gonna go out on me soon and i have a deal on a y-block n 3 speed i think trans or maybe it's a 4 speed. so i was just wondering if i might have alot of problems with it or not
If the engine is clean inside, and in good shape, you shouldn't have any trouble at all. I have a 312 in my '57 Fairlane. Was rebuilt to stock spec's in spring 2001. I have put over 10,000 miles on it the last 4 summers, including 6 hour trips to PA, and Conn. Purrs like a kitten, and sounds great w/ 30yr. old cherry bombs!! I've never even had to adjust the valves, except after initial break in.These engines did have problems getting oil up to the rocker arms after a while. Make sure your motor is clean inside, and the oil p***eges are not restricted with sludge& ****.I'm not a huge fan of these motors,I just happen to have one and have enjoyed many trouble free miles with it. JMO.... Ford Freak
Doc Fromader did a build up on one a few years ago in Streetrodder mag. & there is some more on them on webrodder.
all righty thanx, i looked at the motor and it looks real clean on the out side but i still gotta pull it apart and check everything, well first i'm gonna get it running, since it's in a truck all ready and see how it runs. it's either that or i'll put in a 302 i got out of a mustange we used to drag race
I have a 292 in mine. It gets the same gas mileage as the straight 6 in my 93 Wrangler. They are heavy duty motors, lots of material in the cylinder walls, simple to overbore, they are also HEAVY! Something like 650+ pounds! There are sites on the web that deal with the oil circulation problem in the heads. Most of it was solved with a Dremel, and taking the time to remove excess casting material.
You keep high detergent oil in it and it will last a long time. Strong durable motors with a indestructable botton end. They didnt take too well to the old wax oils of the 50's.I run 15w40 diesel oil in my 312 and it keeps it very clean inside. Cant beat the sound of a dual exhaust y-block.
I had a 5.0 and AOD on hand for my 56 but went w/ the Y Block and a T-5. Love it !! Also running the Delo 15W40 diesel oil. Has anti scuff addatives that help w/ the solid lifters.
I'm running a mostly stock 312 in my 56 wagon and it runs like a dream. I've got no shroud on the car, and sitting in traffic on my was to school it would get to maybe 180, once I started moving again daow to 160. I took it up to Billetproof one year and aside from the g****vine, never got over 165-170. They're great solid engines. I love mine.
I love Y blocks! But be aware... performance parts and dress up stuff can be more difficult to find than most other Ford motors.
