looking into getting a project model A. really all i need is the body but ch***is would be nice...problem is that a lot of the ones that i am running across have no ***le. Im not sure if they still have the vin plates in them or not... but how to you go about getting a ***le for one with and for one without a vin plate? i live in ohio and i dont think they are to picky about things from what i have noticed. anyone run into this? hate to buy a project and not be able to get a ***le for it
See if your state will let you bond a car to get a ***le or buy a frame with a correct ***le. I would go to the website for ohio dmv and see what they allow. In illinois you can do it, it's a pain in the **** but you can do it. Check out the site and bring it back up again or PM me I have done it in Illinois.
Got a trusted friend in NY? NY doesn't have ***les on 1972 and older vehicles and it fairly simple to push one through the NY DMV without paperwork. Then he can sell the car back to you?
I just buy an Ohio ***le for any early 30's car( any make), they all look the same, and use it.. As long as I can get license and insurance, cops or insurers don't know the difference.........
Will NY actually issue a ***le though? GA doesn't require a ***le for anything '86-back, but they won't issue you a new ***le for it either.
Beware of registration-only states. I know that Illinois will NOT accept these, and I believe that Ohio will not also. Best bet is to ask at the DMV, or just wait for a ***led car. I know that ****s, but it ****s less than having your car taken away and crushed. Cosmo
Lots of states have no ***le so you will miss out on a bunch of cars. I know here in NY and CT YOU CAN NOT ***le a 20+ year old car. I just sold a car to a guy in NC and he had a fit because i had no ***le only a bill of sale(clearly posted in ad). I went to CT MVD and had a copy of our law sent to NC MVD and they just had a cop look at his #s down there and they reg it. Also Fla and Ohio.( NO BONDS) So you cant take NO for and answer. But do have the #s checked before you buy.
Ohio accepts a "Bill Of Sale" on old To Be Tagged, "Cl***ic or Antique" cars ,,you'll need to dream up a frame/body number and stamp it in the frame ,,
NY does not issue a ***le on 72 and older, just a transferrable registration stub like a few other states.I sold non ***le NY cars and cycles to Florida,California, Louisiana, and a guy in Holland,no problem. If Ohio won't accept a legal transferrable reggie from states using them ,oh well.
Read carefully, like I say I've purchased a wreck with no numbers from a non ***le state. You can do any game you want, It is always nice to know what the real requirements are. If you buy it, you can decide the way you want to go later, this a MUST HAVE ITEM. You need a bill of sale from the seller with their name address and phone number, and purchase price, YOU NEED A BILL OF SALE WITH A NOTARY PUBLIC STAMP FROM THE STATE OF PURCHASE, your local currency exchange guy will not touch it. If you do not get this your DMV will or can attempt to tax you for what ever they THINK your car is worth and you can owe thousands in vehicle tax. Take pictures of every single thing you do and keep all reciepts. If you buy an engine or a frame get notarized bills of sale for these as well. If you had told ME this that "I" have just told you, "I" would have $4000.00 dollars in my pocket. This advice is worth 4 grand, If my wife finds out she will cut off my jolly makers.
Hey Lapper, Going through this right now in Ohio, I had a bill of sale and nothing else. I was back and forth with the BMV a few times and they would not issue me a ***le. Problem being, car is so old it probably never had a ***le issued to it when it was first pulled off the lot, and the fact that a VIN# was not introduced until much later they can't use the serial number. They basically want to know where the car has been for the last 80+ years to make sure it isn't stolen. They suggested that I get a court ordered ***le through common pleas and that is where I am at right now. I am headed down to the court house this week to open a new case ($200 in portage county) and I will have to prove that I made contact with the BMV and hope that my story checks out. I'll keep you posted!
Ford bodies don't have serial numbers. Ford stamped the frame, the bell housing and other places, but not the body. You need a frame to get a ***le unless you have the state issue you one. There is no way to show a number to prove ownership.
I just got a 29 on a 32 frame ***le in phoenix, az. I kept all my receipts and took them and the car to the dmv and had it inspected. They issued me an az vin plate and a ***le. I then gave the car to my dad in Iowa and he had no problems transferring it over to Iowa. It was very painless and cheap.
Save yourself the headaches. Buy a ***le preferably an Ohio ***le. If you do buy an out of state ***le it will need to have the serial number inspected by the bmv. Car dealers can do it too but I don't know if they do it for the general public. I've never tryed but have heard that NY regs will not work. So I wouldn't go that route. If you do buy a ***le and it's from a state that reguires notaries. You need to make sure it is.If it's not notarized it's no good. They will not make any exceptions. If the state doesn't require it you'll be fine. You can call the Ohio bmv and they will tell which states aren't. When I bought my 34 truck it came with a ***le. It was a Nebraska ***le last transfered in 47. I bought in from a guy in Michigan, he was nice enough to transfer it to a current Michigan ***le. I know if I would have walked in to the bmv with the ***le from 47 it would have been a huge ordeal. I walked in with the current Michigan ***le and my out of state inspection paperwork and walked out with an Ohio ***le in my name. Search the cl***ifieds here, ebay, and swap meets. They're usually listed as historical do***ents.
okay THANKS! for all the info. at first kinda thought about just picking up a body and doin the frame myself but i will make sure to find a project that has a frame with it and i think i will stop by the ***le office today and see what else i need to do...just for some extra info i changed a motorcycle ***le from offroad to on road and all i had to do was sign a paper no inspection req. i wish it was that easy for these old cars. will post what i find out from the ***le office
not really sure what thats all about doc? if it was about the motorcycle ***le change i have went through and installed a dual sport kit with all the lights, blinkers and mirrors that is req by law to make it streetable..im not tring to hide anything in the least. but anyway talked to some people at the ***le office and they it mostly depends on what state i buy it from every one is different..says some ***led cars clear back to 1927 and others didnt and as already known if it has current out of state ***le no problem to switch...said if i end up parting one together i have to have it inspected and it would be cl***ified as a 2010(if its done by the end of the year)home built veh. so looks like i can get it done either way just one way might take a little longer then the other. any other info suggestions?
fact the state of ohio no longer accepts new york ***le scams. They got hip to that **** years ago. Go see your uncle in tennissee Doc rules !! !! !!
I've still got a legit ***le for a 1980 Buick Century (already in my name) that I s****ped out for the engine. I'm thinking I'm going register my 27T Touring on a Model A frame with a late model four cylinder and Mustang T5 on that ***le. Just stamp the Buick vin on a tag, mount it on the car and use that to register it as a historical vehicle. If I get called on it I'll just say I rat-rodded the Buic frame originally and then built it in to a real car. I'm 99% sure I can get away with it. I still have the motor and trans from the Buick. Of course this is tongue in cheek, but I think I could do it. I've played around enough with the DMV to know there is always a way around the roadblocks. I've learned you never get angry with them, it only makes things harder. It's always better to be extremely friendly and helpful and play dumb and frustrated. Make them think they are royalty for every little thing they do for you, and then they help more...
You don't want a homebuilt ***le. I helped a friend register a bike once. You have to go to the state patrol. They want a receipt for everything including all the nuts, bolts, cans of paint, everything you can think of. Not to mention everything will have to be 2010 spec. (from what I've been told). Plus I know it will hurt your resell. I know I would pay less for a 2010 homebuilt then a 1930 ford model a. ***les are not hard to find. Lets not forget you're going to pay a lot more in taxes, because that's really what is about. Does the man need to tax you on everything you bought? The motor you bought at the swap meet. The rear end you bought off of craigslist and list goes on and on.
I have to think there's a difference between giving the Ohio BMV a 1958 NYS registration, and giving them a 2010 one, along with a notarized reciept. I asked them about this myself because I sold a car there, a few weeks back. Consensus is pretty much you need to have the VIN inspected by someone and go from there. Should be another long thread on Ohio, search for Ohio BMV and it should come up and give a few more answers.
I just bought a car from CT with no ***le. I got a notorized bill of sale and a copy of his last registration. Went to bmv and got ohio ***le in 5 minutes
Be careful, sometimes it can be a real pain if you get the ball breaker clerk at the dmv or tax office. Or make it easy on yourself, get one with a ***le.
Are you serious Tim? I'm coming to your bmv. Where do you go. There is no way they would let that fly at the one in Chardon.
Except, of course, that NY doesn't issue ***les for our cars, and it's easy to get a legitimate new registration with no paperwork at all.
I called my local bmv to ask before driving to CT. They said I needed a detailed notorized bill of sale and his last state of CT registration. And then a out of state inspection once home. Which my buddy does at his car lot. I did what they said and got ***le in 5 minutes.
The state of South Carolina will no longer issue a ***le to a vehicle from out of state without seeing the vehicle and verifying the VIN number. They are wise to all the registration scams ... When I bought my newest project ( a Mercury pickup ... 1949 M-47 ) I had to haul the truck to the DMV ... and have them see the truck and see the VIN number. This was last week. August 2010. No problem ... I had everything in order ... and have the new SC ***le now in hand. A few years back ... the SC DMV honored valid ***les from other states. I had no problems with my 32 3W ... the ***le was a 1948 issue NC ***le.
