Great pics! Since you are in Indiana, home of Studebaker since the turn of the last century, I'm surprised you don't see more of them around. South Bend produced Hoosierbakers until 1964, then Hamilton Ontario carried on for another two model years...so there's the connection to Red Green and Canada.

Im suprised how many of you guys down south know of Red Green...awesome. He lives in my hometown of Hamilton Ontario, I see him out once in awhile in his Viper, and no it doesnt have duct tape on it

  3. Red Green was awesome. One of my favorite episodes is when he did the gullwing doors on his K-Car using a garage door opener.

Anyone ever see the episode when he did the power window conversion on his van using a hand mixer like you use to mash potatoes? It was brilliant (seriously).

I was wondering the same thing. I dig the smooth look - almost like the old wire wheel covers from the 30s.

You guys hit the gullwing doors deal, but remember how he removed them? Bill running into the open door with the Chevy truck! Before the Wives and permanent girlfriends and such, we all used to congregate here at the house and drink beer and watch it on Sunday nights. Too cool!

I'm not exactly sure when the Red Green Show got it's hooks into me, but I think it might have been when they did an oil change on an old Grand Prix and the first thing he did was pull the engine.

Or it might have been when they used a circular saw to replace a headlight in Moose Thompson's LTD.:D

It's only been kind of recently that I've realized that the Avanti's design was one of those love it or hate it deals. Not everything that Raymond Loewy designed was a winner, but I've always felt that the Avanti was one of his high points. As I said recently in another HAMB post, it may not be a perfect design but I can't think of one thing I could do that would improve it. Most impressive to me is the fact that it looks nowhere near being an almost 50 year old design.

I miss Red. I used to watch it every day at lunch in the summer when school was out. He made some great stuff, and his 'sidekicks' were just as funny as he was.

  11. Nah, it's pretty much anywhere PBS is if that station choses it as a program. Way out West we see it all the time..

Don't know if you can still buy the suspenders. There was a small list of Red Green stuff you could buy if you became a member of his Possum Lodge. A bunch of us would go to Toronto every year to watch a live taping of his show. We would line up in the hallway outside the studio. If you were wearing a plaid shirt the producers helper might clip a clothespin on the front of it. You would sit through the show and then the last taping was when they called the meeting together at the Possum Lodge. If you were in the audience wearing the clothespin you got called up on stage to be a lodge member for the final scene. Always a funny evening.

We "found" Red Green on TV about 15 years ago after a long day checking out cars up nort at Back to the Fifties in St. Paul. Have watched it ever since.

Many of his creations will make you cringe, but some are downright engineering marvels.

I hail from Iowa, the Red Green Public Television Fundraiser Contest Winning State for more than one year running (back when they did that sort of thing). Proud to say we have the most loyalist fans in the US.

  19. I concur that it was one of the really timeless designs AND the first car I believe to feature asymmetrical design(at least in a production car;there were a couple of Virgil Exner designs in the 50's to feature it).I have a friend of mine back east whose father was a Studebaker dealer and he still owns the first Avanti he got in the dealership;an R-2 model in ***ian Red.It has never been ***led to anyone except the dealer.

As a side note I heard a story from a fairly reliable source that the reason the Avanti never really took off in sales was that they(Studebaker)could not supply the dealers. The reason for this was supposedly that the body manufacturer(MFG Boat Company)was tooling up for the new(1963)Corvette Sting Ray and simply did not have the production capacity to do both cars.As GM had been a customer for about 10 years they elected to go ahead with the Corvette rather than take a chance on a brand new customer.By the time they were able to start producing them, the interest in the Avanti had cooled considerably.Who knows what would have happened had Studebaker been able to supply a quan***y of Avantis;they might still be in business.

If all else fails... Play dead...

Red is a hoot. First one I ever saw was the headlight repair with the circular saw. I thought who is this kazoo.. Then later figured it out some..
