What is the Best Stuff out there Now ?

EOS ? Torko ? Red Line ? LUCAS ? Comp Cams ? What the Hell ?

I sure dont want to Flatten a Clay Smith Cam & Mushroom Y-Block Lifters.

By the way, I did a search and most postes were Old and a bit Drawn out.

Lucas is what I use. Really, anything that has Zinc in it should be fine. Run it at varying RPM's 15oorpm and above for 20 minutes to establish a wear pattern, then leave it in there for 1000 miles. Change the oil, using VR1, Brad Penn, Rotella or another zinc-fortified oil. Also STP has Zinc in it, I add a cup of that every time I change the oil in my flathead.

I was under the impression you only needed the Zinc fortified oil at the initial start-up and break in time. This is when the Zinc became impregnated into the cam lobes and lifter faces. Do you guys continue to use oil containing Zinc just to be on the safe side or what ?

I always thought break in should be done with a straight wt oil like SAE 30-40. I'll figure your cam and lifters are coated and ready, and clearly any SAE oil should have the proper amount of zinc for an older motor. After break in I'd cut the filter open (is it filtered?) check it out for metal or trash and then move on. The other gig was to use light break in springs on the valves.

I used the EOS too but changed to BG MOA once i heard they changed the formula. After speaking to a few very seasoned engine builders around here i was told that was the way to go.
I use it at every oil change and have had no issues at all with my solid cammed truck in the past year and a half and over 9000 miles. Also, i run Valvoline VR race oil as well.
In a pinch, a bottle of Comp Cams break in additive has whats needed too.
    Just another couple options.

In preparation for firing up the new engine in the woodie I just filled it with straight 30w Brad Penn Break-in oil. I plan on continuing to use Brad Penn in the engine. I've already enjoyed the thrill of losing a cam lobe in the sbc in a previous car and really don't want to repeat the experience.

Nope, there's number of Threads on ZDDP. The new SM rated oil has NO ZDDP & isn't backward compatible.

I use Joe Gibbs break in oil and the additive from the cam manufacture. Also Lucas sells a small bootle of the cam/***embly lube thru Vato Zone. Its like $4.50

X2..............I used the Brad Penn Break-In oil with a bottle of Comp's
zinc additive per the advice of my machinist. After initial break-in I went
to the Brad-Penn 10W30 with 1/2 bottle of the additive. Now I just run the Brad-Penn. Reason being, I don't think Brad-Penn will change the amount of zinc in their oil.

We use 30wt during initial breakin along with any eos that has the zddp. At this point we have had no issues and do not always use the same two products together. We now recommend a zddp additive at each oil change.
