Anyone have photos of the Spiegel Brothers 41 Willys A/GS 2 door sedan. Ran at Fremont, Vacaville Sacramento, Lodi and half Moon Bay from 1967 to 1969. Fast car 8.65 et 165 mph. Was a show car as well winning best Compe***ion Cl*** at Sacramento several years, appeared in Jan 70 HOT ROD magazine and again Mar 09 HOT ROD DELUXE magazine. Appears on Jackson Bros G***er Files I & II Sponsored by M&M Speed Engineering in Citrus Heights CA. Would appreciate your help with any photos, info or stories. Thanks!
Thank You! This is probably the most recognizeable photo taken by Harry Walker for the Jan '70 HOT ROD Magazine. In '67 the Spiegel's first ran a blown 434 Chev in BB/GS then switched to blown 392 Chrysler stepping up into AA/GS. I know there were many Hamber's who frequented the northern California strips especially Fremont and was hoping to get some pit shots or starting line action from private collections
I presume you're the current owner of the car. I remember seeing it for sale and knew right away it was the Spiegel Bros car. Post up some pics of what it currently looks like, whether it's blown apart or not. As far as vintage pics go, try these guys. James Handy http://jameshandyphotography.zenfolio.com/f914032728 I know he had a couple. At least one color and one b&w. Handy separated a lot of the g***ers out into one album, but they're not all in there. Go through each album and look and mark them. Also try Les Welch http://www.leswelch.com/contents.html I know I remember seeing a 2 or 3 in his "Old Stuff" albums. Seems like there's even a really old pic in 1967 Fremont stuff. Also contact Steve Reyes. I know he has a few shots. His e-mail is sb.reyes@cox.net Good luck.
I have a few let me do some digging, you know its a 1940 deluxe 4 door sedan with a 1941 gl*** nose dont you.
Thanks Willys Rule and Dave McCauley... I was informed by others at the time I acquired the car that it was a late '39 but others had told me that there was an abundance of '39 bodies and when the new model year was rapidly approaching the Willys Company slapped a new front end on it and sent them out the door... yes it is a Deluxe. The garnish moldings are welded in as are the doors. The rear side windows sit in 360 degree rubber seal and when I pulled away the custom door panels there isn't any provision for regulators. The outer door has a smooth fill in plate where a door handle should have been. I guess it is possible that the Spiegel's did an exceptional job of body and interior work... none the less it is a nicely done. Will post pictures of it's current condition.
Here's the other side shot... came with a 355 SBC tunnel Ram with dual 600 Holleys and a Turbo 350 with a Hurst Quarter Stick. The hood has some lettering on it, the interior is pretty much the same as in the day however there has been some attempt to make a sheet metal console which is not well constructed. The roll bar was removed but the Baja bucket seats the Covina steering wheel and all the rest of the custom naugahyde and carpetiing are still in the car and intact.
Well Mr. Dave, the sedan was in really great shape... I'd say 70 percent of it's original state. All the custom made pieces were there. The suspension was untouched in the rear, quarter elliptic springs, ladder bars, watts linkage, wheelie bars, pontiac rear end, Henrys axles, in fact the rear brake hardware looks brand new. The front end has new disc brakes, but the original spindels came with the car. The CAE custom tube axle, chrome front springs and original drag shocks are all there. Custom aluminum work is there however someone made a feeble attempt to install a Ron Francis wiring system which was hacked into the pristine dash drivers glovebox. There was a serious attempt to make this a street rod but someone either ran out of time , money or desire. There were so many quality parts the Spiegel's put on this car before they teamed up with the Burkholder Brothers and they decided to go funny car racing in1970 with a '70 Cuda called the "Brotherhood". The 464 stroked 392 and B&M Torque flite were transplanted in the "Cuda and layer sold. John Spiegel told me that it became to expensive to compete and after one season they bowed out and went into arena truck racing instead.
Regarding the "Brotherhood Funny Car" John, **** & Steve Spiegal had the late John Shoemaker from Sacramento build the ch***is, John Spiegal contacted the Burkholders to see if they wanted to "move up" to a Funny Car. It was in 1973, Fuel Altereds were at the end of their life cycle (at that time) due to NHRA combining them in a Combo Eliminator bracket. I put the 3/8" stroked Chrysler Hemi from the altered in the car and we ran it direct drive for a season, making rounds in Nor-Cal events and some match racing. Best time as I recall: 221MPH, 6.91ET. Hairy Burkholder
