I took HOP UP Annual issue 4 into the can tonight and as I was flipping through I noticed on page 97 a partial shot of a 1934 Ford 3w that was has 723 B on the door and Evans equipped on the Hood. I've spent the last hour looking for this car but cannot come up with any pics. If you have shots of this Yellow Coupe please post them and the history. I am interested to learn about this car I have never seen prior. Also while we're on the subject of yellow Model 40's (aka '33-34) if you have pics of Ed Pinks yellow 3w that's in the article TRJ did this latest issue you may as well post pics of that one too. I am interested to learn as much as I can about both of these cars. Thanks, JJ
I suppose that if you posted the pic you are refering too then there may be some more response. Not everyone in the "hobby" subscribes to Hop Up mag...
Probably a good idea there Smithy1, only how can I post a pic of the car if I don't have one? The ad really only shows the door which is lettered 723 B. I guess I could take a picture of the ad with my camera but it's only half of the car. You either know it or you don't.
They should have! You mean this one? I'll look at my other stuff tonight and see if I have anything else on this one. Sorry in advance if this scan ****s!
Aha! I knew someone would own up to it sooner or later... I know folks that go to church with no bibles...
Hey Jeffery, There was a thread that popped up last night by a guy that goes by the name rocknrollratfink, He took some of his granfathers super 8 films from the fifties and put them on CD. The first one of the batch was Santa Ana drags in about '53 or '54. I won't swear to it, but I think that car was on there. Wish I could remeber the name of the thread though...
Hey Jeffrey! found that thread I was talking about yesterday. It's called POLL: Old Hot Rod Footage. There are three films of about 5 -9 minutes each. The first one is the Santa Anna drags and has the footage of the car you are looking for, I believe. It was the first time I have seen many of these cars in color, so I was just kinda taken aback, and didn't really concentrate on any specific cars. The car the posters grandfather was running that day though, if I remember correctly, is the '34 five window that became the Moonyham and Sharp 554 Comp coupe, back when it had fenders. The second film is a day in the back yard getting the '54 or '55 era slingshot ready for the drags, and then cuts to Bonneville of the same time frame. The third film shocked me. Daytona beach land speed racing. I almost didn't watch it because Daytona screams NASCAR, and frankly, that bores me to tears, even the old stuff. But back in '57 '58 '59, they ran speed trials on the beach. This is footage of that. Modified Corvettes, T-birds with tonnue covered and headrest pods set up to go fast! Even a '57 Merc with the roof removed and a hard tonnue and headrest! Towed by a matching hard top '57 Merc !!! Aw heck, just watch them your self, even if they don't have the info you need, their worth your time... Later, Chip
The roadster in the photo is the 1949-'50 version of the Fred Carrillo roadster owned, restored and shown at Pebble Beach last Sunday by HAMBer Frank Morawski.
The '34 coupe shown in the picture ( no. 723 ) was the Gorton Bros. cl*** B Coupe entry at the 1950 Bonneville meet. The engine was listed as a 239" flathead. The coupe recorded speeds in the 119 mph area. The Gorton Bros. were from Norwalk and would later run a '34 sedan with Dean Moon. Don www.montgomeryhotrodbooks.com.
That's awesome guys!!!! Thanks so much!!! If anybody has any other pics please post them because this car needs to be known.
Theres an article in Rodders Journal # 48 about Pink. There is a good shot of the car on the Lakes in there.
