  1. Actually I believe it is "Pferd" if you want to be totaly accurate. It means "Horse" in German

I thought it was a plural thing, you know, if you have one you say "will-iss", but if you have several, you refer to them as "will-ease"

There is no way that the spelling of Willys could be pronounced Willis without a strong twist in dialect. It would be interesting to know the language history of the family.

Twist in dialect? Do you say rhythm, or rheethm? System or seestem? Cryptic or creeptic? Mythical or meethical?

C'mon people, it's phoenetically pronounced Will-iss. Willies sounds ridiculous. I noticed it's mostly buckeyes coming up with this goofy pronunciation, and everyone knows they can't speak English worth a damn. :D

Williss or Willeze either one attached to a steel coupe, I can not afford

Some folks used to pronounce Ford as Turd

  11. Unless its a Willys Whippet!!! I have always heard it called Willeez like
    Many
    crazy
    heavy
    Bonny
    Willy
    ****ty
    pissy

    I think Dialect is responsible.

I have to make myself say Willis- and it seems to only be when I'm referring to a stock one.

  16. John Willys pronounced it, "Willis." There should be no further argument. We all hear people mispronounce words or use them incorrectly every day. Just because you "seen" something doesn't make it correct, "irregardless" of how many people say it. I have a friend that says, "masonary", even though he knows it is both spelled and pronounced "masonry". He says it sounds funny. Maybe it does, but I'll stick with "masonry", "Willis" and that I "saw" something the other day. I guess I'm turning into a grouchy old buzzard, but the degree of stupidity that we, as a culture, are slipping into is appalling. You can't even talk to anyone under 30, it sometimes seems, without every other word being "like", "dude" or "ya know"

  17. I've heard it both ways. I don't see that it is an issue unless the original owner of the company or his relatives are offended by it.

Funny thing about wikipedia is that you don't have to substantiate anything you put on there.

  18. Slightly O/T, but I miss the way our last president said, nukaler, like nukaler reactor.

If you're going to mispronounce it, at least mispronounce it right. Nucular!

I always thought it was funny how the Brits proudly say 'aluminium.' Or worse yet, 'alloy!'

I had the great honor of meet big john mazmanian before he p***ed away and i asked him this question. He put one of those big old hands on my shoulder and said "young lady if you pronounce it any other way than willis then your saying it wrong" I have always said willis since then.

55 posts later and ya still can't figure it out??? It's WIllys!! Plain and simple! :)

  27. Maybe he just liked it sounding like it was from way south and thats how his illiterate parents said it. LOL! The correct grammar for this name should be pronounced Willeez.
If it was spelled Willis then thats how it should have sounded.
Just my opinion. I have never heard it called Willis. And I own one.

I have always said will-eez but I think it really is will-is, that just sounds weird to me

if a guy named billy had one that said
billys willys it would sound like "bill-eez,will-eez"

    bill-is,will-is, just sounds wrong :eek::D
