I had the same problem when I was in highschool, Gas station mechanic fixed it by replacing the distributor cap. it had a tiny crack that allowed it to arc. If you want to check it look at the distrubtor at night and rev the engine up , should see arcing, Try it , may work for you also , by the way I finished high school in 1962,,,,
OK, it's been hot as ballz here in Peachtree City, so wrenching has been a little miserable after a long day at work. plugs are all good, wires tested fine, coil is good, points/condenser test fine. I am running a 4" Air cleaner, could this be hurting things?
Sounds like was already said. Get rid of the fuel filter before the pump. If the tank is that dirty get a new one. Sounds lean when hot to me. Does it have an insulator between carb and manifold? Can't remember if my 55 does or not. Lippy
Wait until about 10 o'clock. Go out and fire it up some place dark, NOT in your garage. I'm guessing you'll see blue spark from a cap, wire or plug.
OK........don't want to curse myself, but I THINK I fixed it. - Tossed in 6 new plugs - old were good - All wires good - Adjusted Valves (2 had just a little play) - points had almost ZERO gap <<<<< set them at about .018" It seems to be running just fine now, but did get stuck in 1st gear for some odd reason for a few miles. Thanks guys!!!
my 50 chev over centers in low gear .. mostly when putting in gear for parking .. engine off coil wire removed clutch must be pressed in and shifter arm slid over.. two man job with wheels blocked on level surface .. one man job with a stick between pedal and seat look for the shiney spot on the arm where linkage shoud be its only off by 1/2 -3/4 inch good luck
