Hey it's been awhile but there are 2 sizes of sealed bearings with S/S shafts sticking out both ends used in aftermarket pumps I got them from Graingers in so cal should be able to rebuid pumps with them
    hope this helps

  3. I used the PAW Front cover for the BBC Water pump, a Chev single pulley on the Water Pump, and Hot Heads lower aluminum pulley, which I had Black Anodised. I worked out great and the engine runs cool, saved some weight and a bit of length on the engine.

Here's my setup for the Chevy water pump conversion on the Desoto (291). Wasn't too hard actually...

  5. I've got a question on the Chevy water pump conversion. Does using the Chevy pump give any more clearance between the fan and radiator than the Stock timing case/pump? This would be for a low deck DeSoto Hemi in a 32 Ford...

  6. The reason I'm REALLY considering going to an aluminum HH timing cover/short Chevy pump, is to save space between the mechanical fan and the radiator. I want to install my DeSoto Hemi far enough forward in my 32 frame, to be able to remove the distributor easily, and not have to butcher up the Roadster firewall. The difference is between the Stock and HH set-up is FOUR INCHES! Distance from the machined front surface of the DeSoto block (where the chaincase mounts) to the front surface of the fan hub is 9"+. The same measurement with the HH/Short Chevy pump is 5"+. Of course, I'll need to whack the snout off the roller cam, and use a 330/341 timing set-up, but that's not a Show Stopper. Pump dependability doesn't enter into it...I just don't want to use a damned POS electric fan....

Yes!! and it cleans up the front of the motor Considerably

  8. S****S - What did you use for Chevy water pump and damper pulleys on your low deck DeSoto...the set-up in your pictures? Did you use a Stock DeSoto damper?...

IIRC, all of the alum front covers require a 'short' cam nose which requires additional money/machine time. I believe this was covered in the cam section of the index.

My opinion, "If yer gunna run SBC parts why not just build a SBC?"

Hey man, nothing personal, but let's keep this fact and keep opinion out of this. There are plenty of "is it traditional" threads out there. This thread is intended to help not hamper. There are people doing this and/or are going to do this for their own reasons and this should help them if they plan to do the conversion.

Again, nothing personal. Just trying to keep this focused. Thanks man!

The set-up in the Pics uses stock Desoto damper......
Single (283 style) on the bottom w/ 1/4 in. spacer to line up with top pulley
    Short water Pump
single (deep 283 style) on the h2o pump
Wasn't too tuff a deal...Plenty of pulleys available @ the swap meet cheap. I had mine on the shelf........

  14. So the Chevy balancer pulley bolted right up to the DeSoto Damper?!....

    NO.....

Here's a pic of the bottom pulley you need..

Took a stock pulley(Desoto) and lined up what holes I could get to line up. Next I transfer punched the remaining holes to the SBC pulley and drilled them.
The damper bolt for the Desoto is HUGE as compared to the SBC. So I Trammed in the hole on a Bridgeport, and ran a boring bar till the bolt and washer went thru the center. Had to put a 1/4 inch spacer between the balencer and the pulley to get them to line up top and bottom....

Scooter, I'm going to run into this very question on my '55 331. I am seriously considering the BBC route. Many reasons, weight, ease of finding accessory brackets, etc.

On a side note, Rock Auto sells rebuild stock pumps for the Dodge 315 for about $90. I'm going to buy a 2nd one to keep in the trunk tool box. I can't afford the HH $700+ dress up kit for it, though I wish I could!

Back to the 331, would a person use the short or long BBC water pump if using a blower set up? Does it matter? I've got to use a/c as well (this AZ heat will kill you otherwise). I am also concerned about setting the motor as forward as possible (1950 Hudson Coupe install). What about running an electric water pump? Does it save anything on a street blower motor?

Great thread Scooter, and I also get irritated when asking for answers, not opinions, there are too many opinions out there anyway. lol

As was mentioned, the long BBC will fit over the stock '55 timing cover, how that ties into the rest of the blower Q....

For you guys using Chevy H2O pumps and Chrysler (Hemi, 340 or 440) dampeners, what lower pulleys are you using?
    Thanks!
